POLAROID INTRODUCES NEW FULLY AUTOMATIC AND AFFORDABLE INSTANT CAMERA FOR LIGHT MICROSCOPY

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Polaroid Corporation (NYSE: PRD) today introduced a new fully automatic, single-lens-reflex (SLR), instant camera for photographing any specimen through a light microscope.
Called MicroCam SLR, the new Polaroid microscope camera combines low cost with a remarkably sophisticated exposure and filtration control system to produce high-quality instant color and black-and-white prints with push button ease. MicroCam SLR simplifies the photographic process for anyone who works with a microscope, from the classroom to the advanced research laboratory.
Weighing only 2.2 pounds with dimensions of 8x7x7 inches, the portable MicroCam SLR can be readily moved from microscope to microscope to serve as the imaging system for an entire laboratory. The camera attaches to a microscope by sliding its 10X magnification lens directly into the microscope's eyepiece tube or phototube, allowing it to fit almost all light microscopes. MicroCam's multi-element glass lens produces sharp, clear pictures, and the bright, single-lens-reflex viewing system makes it easy for the microscopist to focus and frame the specimen. The camera's LCD panel reports all camera functions in any of six user-selectable languages -- English, French, German Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
Innovative Polaroid technology allows the MicroCam SLR to eliminate the exposure and color filtration problems caused by the tungsten light sources and long exposures that are typical in photomicrography. The camera's built-in digital light meter, microprocessor, and color correction filter combine to automatically produce the correct exposure and filtration for high-quality color and black-and-white prints. The advanced exposure control system adjusts the exposure time to compensate for film speed loss at long exposures and controls the color balance of the final print by adjusting the percentage of the total exposure that is made through the color correction filter. In addition to its automatic functions, MicroCam SLR offers a manual mode that lets the user precisely time any exposure up to 10 hours.
MicroCam SLR produces instant 3x4-inch Polaroid Type 339 color or Type 331 black-and-white AutoFilm prints. The instant AutoFilm prints provide the resolution, color fidelity, and long-term permanence that can only be achieved with photography. At the end of each exposure, the camera ejects the film, which develops automatically without the need to time or peel the print. Both Polaroid AutoFilms are approved for use in class 100 clean rooms.
MicroCam SLR is manufactured by Polaroid in Newton, Mass., for sale throughout the world. It is currently available in the United States through Polaroid Professional Products Dealers. The camera system has a suggested list price of $795.
Polaroid Corporation, with sales of more than $2 billion, is the worldwide leader in instant imaging. The company supplies instant photographic cameras and films, conventional cameras and films, videotapes, and electronic imaging products to markets worldwide including amateur and professional photography, industry, science, medicine and education.
