POLAROID CONFIRMS COLLABORATION WITH IBM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Polaroid Corporation (NYSE: PRD) confirmed today that it is working with International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) on a project involving digital camera systems and mobile computers.
IBM demonstrated a prototype of the integrated system at the 1993 Consumer Electronic Show, which opened today in Las Vegas.
Peter O. Kliem, Polaroid senior vice president, Electronic Imaging, said, "Polaroid is committed to expanding its business in new areas of the rapidly growing imaging industry, and digital imaging products, such as these, represent an important new direction. In working with IBM and other leading companies we are leveraging Polaroid's known creativity and strengths to produce customer-responsive high quality, high resolution imaging systems."
Polaroid's collaboration with IBM involves an integrated Polaroid color digital camera system that captures photographic quality images -- two to three times better than standard television quality -- in digital format directly on an IBM mobile or desktop computer using industry-standard storage technology. The images then can be added to image-capable software applications. By working together, the companies contributed innovative connectivity and image processing software to achieve seamless solutions for customers with substantially improved costs and portability.
Digital imaging products are expected to find widespread commercialization in the next few years. "Polaroid's innovations in digital imaging, when combined with advances in mobile computing technolgy, are converging to create a new class of powerful and affordable business applications," Kliem said. "We see more opportunities for rapid access high quality imaging, and Polaroid, following the migration path of instant photography, fully intends to participate in that area."
The camera-computer interface demonstrated today is based upon industry standards established by the Personal Computer memory Card International Association, which will enable across the board interoperability and interconnectivity.
Polaroid has invested more than 10 years in microelectronics research and development. Polaroid is already providing a family of imaging peripherals that interface within the computer environment, including color film recorders, color image scanners and photo printers, all of which involve high quality input and output. These products, along with the model shown today, are part of Polaroid's newly organized imaging media and peripherals group.
Polaroid Corporation, with sales of more than $2 billion, is the worldwide leader in instant imaging. The company supplies instant photographic cameras and films, conventional cameras and films, videotapes and electronic imaging products to worldwide markets of amateur and professional photography, industry, science, medicine and education.
