POET BROOKS TO READ IN CALARTS PROGRAM.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks will return April 16 to CalArts as part of the Poetry Today Series, presented by the School of Critical Studies.

Brooks will read in a free program from 4 to 6 p.m. in Langley Hall on the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
 known as CalArts

Recipient of the National Medal of Arts The National Medal of Arts is an award and title created by the Congress of the United States in 1984, for the purpose of honoring artists and patrons of the arts. It is the highest honor conferred to an individual artist on behalf of the people.  in 1995, Brooks, 79, is one of America's most eminent poets. A member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters National Institute of Arts and Letters: see American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.  and the National Women's Hall of Fame The National Women's Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by a group of people in Seneca Falls, New York, the location of the 1848 Women's Rights Convention. The mission of the National Women's Hall of Fame is "to honor in perpetuity those women, citizens of the United States of , she was the first African-American writer to receive a Pulitzer and the first African-American woman to be named as consultant-in-poetry to the Library of Congress, the position now known as the poet laureate of the United States.

In 1994 she was selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)

U.S. independent agency. Founded in 1965, it supports research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
 to deliver the 1994 Jefferson Lecture, the highest honor the federal government bestows for intellectual achievement in the humanities.

Brooks has published nearly 20 books of poetry and received more than 70 honorary doctorates. Her numerous awards include the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contributions to American Letters in 1994, the PEN/Faulkner in 1990 and the Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America The Poetry Society of America is a literary organization founded in 1910 by poets including Witter Bynner. Past members of the Society have included such renowned writers as Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Marianne Moore, and Wallace Stevens.  in 1989.

Currently a writer-in-residence at the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Culture at Chicago State University, Brooks recently has published ``Children Coming Home'' and her autobiography, ``Report from Part One'' and ``Report from Part Two.''

Brooks' work has been described as poetry of social sympathy rather than social protest.
