PNG appeal for new chapel; AROUND THE DIOCESE.


NEWCASTLE Diocese retains friendly links - and an ongoing interest - in the Anglican church in Papua New Guinea Papua New Guinea (păp`ə, –y , not least because Peter Ramsden, former vicar of St. Bartholomew's. Longbenton, is now the Bishop of Port Moresby Port Moresby (môrz`bē), town (1990 pop. 193,242), capital of Papua New Guinea, on New Guinea island and on the Gulf of Papua. Rubber, gold, and copra are exported. Port Moresby was founded by Capt. John Moresby, who landed there in 1873. , the capital of PNG (Portable Network Graphics) A bitmapped graphics file format endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium. It is expected to eventually replace the GIF format, because there are lingering legal problems with GIFs.  

The Diocese of Port Moresby's Administrative centre Administrative Centre (in Norwegian administrativt senter; in Portuguese centro administrativo) is often used in several countries to refer to a county town, or other seat of regional/local government, or the place where the central administration of a commune is  is located at the Begabari Estate in the capital's Waigani district.  Office, the Anglican National Education Office, Bishop's House and staff housing are sited around a central green space, with the offices for Anglicare - the diocese's initiative for social action which focuses particularly on HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome  education and care, literacy, youth and women's issues - situated opposite.

The one building missing is a chapel for the daily spiritual needs of the staff and visitors to the compound, and at the June meeting of Diocesan Council, approval was given for a chapel to be built at Begabari, which would also be a sign of the Anglican Church's ministry in Waigani.

It is estimated that K 125,000(approx pounds 25,000) will be needed for the construction of the chapel, which will be built by the diocesan Anglican Property Division.
