PMC-Sierra and DASAN Networks Announce Major EPON Equipment Deployment Contract with KT (Korea Telecom).

Nearly One Million Subscribers in Seoul, Korea, Expected to Gain FTTH (Fiber To The Home) See FTTP.  Access in 2007 Using DASAN Equipment Based on PMC-Sierra's EPON See PON.  Chip Set; Seoul Becomes Second Capital City in Asia to Deploy FTTH in Volume

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS PMCS PMC Sierra (stock symbol)

), a leading provider of broadband communications and storage semiconductors, and DASAN Networks, Inc., Korea's leading supplier of broadband access equipment, today announced that KT (Korea Telecom) has selected DASAN Networks for deployment of Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) equipment in the greater metropolitan area of Seoul, Korea. DASAN's gigabit per second EPON solution, based on PMC-Sierra's FTTH chip set using its GigaPASS[TM] architecture, is capable of delivering premium-grade triple-play services - voice, data and video - to Korea's growing FTTH subscriber base. DASAN provides ONUs (Optical Network Units) for FTTH Customer Premises Equipment See CPE.  and OLTs (Optical Line Terminal) FTTH equipment for central office equipment (COs). DASAN Networks expects the number of subscribers under this deployment to reach 800,000 in the 2007 calendar year.

"Korea has consistently been a leader in deploying broadband access technologies and they now join Japan in selecting PMC-Sierra-based EPON FTTH technology for widespread deployment," said Victor Vaisleib, general manager of the FTTH Business Unit at PMC-Sierra. "To be chosen for deployment in Seoul, the nation's capital, is a significant honor. This accomplishment solidifies our position as the worldwide leader in FTTH silicon."

"Korea is committed to high-volume deployment of FTTH technology and we are pleased to win this contract with PMC-Sierra as they are the only silicon supplier with experience in deploying gigabit per second bandwidth FTTH in the millions of units," said Min Woo Nam, chief executive officer, DASAN Networks, Inc. "We continue to be impressed with PMC-Sierra's highly integrated solutions and OAM (Operations Administration Maintenance) Refers to managing and maintaining a network or network device. The P in "OAM&P" adds "provisioning" to the list, which is a telephone company term for setting up a service.  (Operations, Administration, Management), which enable easier installation and support. Our partnership will enable us to meet our goal of delivering cost-effective, reliable, and high-performance FTTH network equipment supporting triple-play services of video, voice, and data."

A PON (Passive Optical Network) An optical point-to-multipoint access network. There are no optical repeaters or other active devices in a PON, hence the name "passive.  (Passive Optical Network) network delivers gigabit per second bandwidth to the consumer using high-bandwidth optical fiber instead of copper wiring. EPON-based FTTH deployments lower the cost of network maintenance because the PON infrastructure requires no active electronics and delivers an order of magnitude A change in quantity or volume as measured by the decimal point. For example, from tens to hundreds is one order of magnitude. Tens to thousands is two orders of magnitude; tens to millions is three orders of magnitude, etc.  greater bandwidth over traditional copper-based access technologies. This bandwidth enables the low-cost delivery of bandwidth-intensive services such as video services, 10-40 megabit per second A megabit per second (abbreviated as Mbit/s, Mbps, or mbps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000,000 bits per second. Because there are 8 bits in a byte, a transfer speed of 8 megabits per second (8 Mbps) is equivalent to 1,000,000 bytes  and greater data access and integrated VoIP telephone services.
