NOTE: A photo and slide show of the TEMUX-84 will be available for

journalists to download beginning today at www.newstream.com

BURNABY, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2000

TEMUX-84 provides OC-48 port card scalability

for T1, E1, T3 and E3 access services

PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS PMCS PMC Sierra (stock symbol)
PMCS Project Management Control System
PMCS partial mission-capable, supply (US DoD)
PMCS Preventive Maintenance Checks & Services
PMCS Professional Military Comptroller School
) today announced the PM8316 TEMUX-84, the industry's highest density channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  access solution, ideal for Metro Optical Access, Multiservice Switches and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (networking) label switching - A routing technique that uses information from existing IP routing protocols to identify IP datagrams with labels and forwards them to a modified switch or router, which then uses the labels to switch the datagrams through the network.  (MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
) Edge Router Also called an "access router," it is a router that sits at the periphery of a network. Contrast with "core router," which is a router that resides in the middle of the network. See router and WAN router. See also edge device.  equipment.

The TEMUX-84 supports the global requirements for framing, mapping and multiplexing of T1, E1, T3, E3 channels into SONET/SDH services. By reducing board space to one quarter of that required using available competitive solutions, TEMUX-84 allows T1, E1, T3 and E3 access port card design densities to scale to OC-48.

The new device joins PMC-Sierra's industry leading portfolio of high density multiservice access solutions which includes the SPECTRA(TM), TEMUX(TM), AAL1gator(TM), MECA MECA Maine College of Art
MECA Middle East Children's Alliance
MECA Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association (Washington, DC)
MECA Marriage Equality California
MECA Mars Environmental Compatibility Assessment
(TM) and FREEDM FREEDM Frame Engine and Data Link Manager (TM) products. The TEMUX-84 provides the next key element to extend PMC-Sierra's access services architecture by enabling next generation equipment to deliver channelized OC-48 line cards. The architecture supports a broad spectrum of existing and emerging services including Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  (FR), Internet Protocol See Internet and TCP/IP.

(networking) Internet Protocol - (IP) The network layer for the TCP/IP protocol suite widely used on Ethernet networks, defined in STD 5, RFC 791. IP is a connectionless, best-effort packet switching protocol.
(IP), Dedicated Private Line, ATM, Integrated Voice and Data, Voice-over-IP and Voice-over-ATM.

"The TEMUX product family meets the density requirements of our award winning ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) Using voice recognition to replace keypad entry for telephone voice menus. Typically used to speak the digits 0 through 9 insted of keying them, ASR systems may be able to recognize a limited vocabulary. See voice recognition and AVSR. 2000 aggregation service router," said Amar Gupta, co-founder and chief technical officer of Amber Networks. "A seamless interface to other PMC-Sierra products, such as FREEDM, helps the ASR2000 achieve its groundbreaking fault tolerance, port density and low power requirement in a scalable architecture that readily supports a variety of channelized line rates."

PMC-Sierra's complete portfolio of high density SONET/SDH line interface solutions including SPECTRA-155, SPECTRA-4x155, SPECTRA-622 and SPECTRA-2488 connect seamlessly with the TEMUX-84. The device supports a Scaleable Bandwidth Interconnect (SBI SBI Special Background Investigation

products. It also supports an H-MVIP bus to interconnect to the MECA-4A Voice-over-ATM processor or to the MECA-4I Voice-over-IP Processor.

TEMUX-84 provides a smooth migration path for the more than 100 existing PM8315 TEMUX designs by providing backwards compatibility for functionality, packaging, power consumption and software. It provides framing and multiplexing for 84 T1 channels or 63 E1 channels into 3 channelized DS-3's or alternatively maps the T1/E1 channels directly into a SONET/SDH aggregate. For higher line rate applications, 4 TEMUX-84's will support a channelized OC-12 data stream, 16 TEMUX-84 devices will support a channelized OC-48 data stream.

"Product complexity and time-to-market pressures have changed the high density access semiconductor selection process from a chip level to an architectural solution level decision," said Glenn Bindley, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Access Product Division. "The TEMUX-84 high density framer/mapper relieves the key density choke point In military strategy, a choke point (or chokepoint) is a geographical feature (such as a valley or defile) which forces an army to go into a narrower formation (greatly decreasing combat power) in order to pass through it.  in current designs and enables our customers to deliver channelized OC-48 service interfaces on one line card."

Pricing, Availability and Customer Support

The PM8316 TEMUX-84 uses low-power 1.8V/3.3V CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  and is packaged in a 23mm by 23mm 324-pin fine pitch PBGA PBGA Plastic Ball Grid Array  package. It is priced at $625 in 1KU quantity through distribution with samples available in Q1, 2001. A comprehensive support package including reference designs, software drivers and bus functional models is offered to simplify design and optimize time-to- market. The reference design and software drivers will be featured on PMC-Sierra's web site (http://www.pmc-sierra.com), the bus functional models may be requested from our applications support hotline (apps@pmc-sierra.com).
