PMC-Sierra Introduces Industry's First Merchant Gigabit Ethernet Mapping Device for SONET/SDH Transport Networks.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BURNABY, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2001

ARROW-2xGE(TM) Enables Standards-based Mapping of Two Channels of

Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  Addressing the Emerging Trend of Ethernet Private

PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS PMCS PMC Sierra (stock symbol)

) today introduced the PM5397 ARROW-2xGE(TM), the first physical layer device for efficient mapping Gigabit Ethernet frames into a SONET/SDH transport network.

The ARROW-2xGE supports two Gigabit Ethernet channels and independently maps each of them into a STS-48/STM-16 channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). Alternate SONET/SDH concatenation techniques are contiguous concatenation and arbitrary concatenation.  (VC) and Generic Framing Procedure Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) is defined by ITU-T G.7041. This allows mapping of variable length, higher-layer client signals over a transport network like SDH/SONET. The client signals can be protocol data unit (PDU) oriented (like IP/PPP or Ethernet Media Access Control) or can  (GFP GFP Green Fluorescent Protein

The highly integrated ARROW-2xGE will be used in Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) transport equipment, including Multi Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP (MultiService Provisioning Platform) A high-end Cisco router that supports TDM circuits, packets and optical connections at the edge of the network. See MSSP and MSTP. ) and add/drop multiplexers. Equipment utilizing the ARROW-2xGE allows service providers to offer carrier-class Ethernet transport over existing SONET/SDH networks, leveraging the performance and reliability of SONET/SDH together with the cost efficiencies of Ethernet.

ARROW-2xGE: Efficient, High Density Gigabit Ethernet Solution to Map Data into SONET

The ARROW-2xGE is implemented entirely in mainstream 0.18 micron 3.3/1.8 volt CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  technology and features a small 31 mm x 31 mm footprint, reducing power consumption and simplifying silicon integration. Power consumption is less than 2 watts/port, which offers over 50% power savings over low-density Gigabit Ethernet solutions that use discrete SERDES See serializer/deserializer. , Gigabit Ethernet Media Access Controllers (MAC), SONET mapper and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  devices. These discrete Ethernet into SONET/SDH solutions do not enable the high density and cost-efficient port pricing required for Ethernet services. Also they do not support standards-based mechanisms to enable efficient independent transport of full rate Gigabit Ethernet channels over a SONET/SDH infrastructure, resulting in network bandwidth being underutilized.

ARROW-2xGE Supports Virtual Concatenation and Generic Framing Procedure Standards

The ARROW-2xGE is the first commercially available device to integrate the Gigabit Ethernet PHY See physical layer and physical. , SERDES and MAC function together with Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) mapping and Virtual Concatenation (VC) for standards-based Gigabit Ethernet into SONET implementations. With VC and GFP support, the ARROW-2xGE enables bandwidth to be provisioned to suit traffic needs enabling services to be offered in cost efficient increments over the same physical Gigabit Ethernet connection. This technique allows several Gigabit Ethernet channels to share the same OC-48 pipe, while still retaining the independence and complete security of each channel. Each Gigabit Ethernet stream can be mapped into any number of STS-1 channels, from one to twenty-one, enabling a number of Gigabit Ethernet channels to be groomed and carried over a SONET/SDH network. In addition, support for these two emerging standards enables inter-working with other standards based equipment. To date, all previous Gigabit Ethernet over SONET implementations have been proprietary.

"All leading transport equipment vendors are building systems that enable Ethernet over SONET/SDH to address trends such as Ethernet private lease line services for multi-national corporations," said Steve Perna, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Optical Networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain. See optical fiber.  Division. "A major barrier to the design of these systems has been the lack of a standards-based mapper that enables Gigabit Ethernet streams to be efficiently provisioned into SONET/SDH channels. The ARROW-2xGE is PMC-Sierra's first in a line of transport oriented framers and mappers to emphasize the new virtual concatenation and generic frame protocol standards."

PMC-Sierra's Integrated Solutions

The ARROW-2xGE provides a direct interface to PMC-Sierra's PM5381 S/UNI(R)-2488 (SONET framer) to provide a two chip solution for two channels of serial Gigabit Ethernet to serial OC-48 (see figure 1). This enables compact, low cost Gigabit Ethernet to SONET muxing as required in Metro DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

In addition, the ARROW-2xGE has a glueless interface with the PM5374 TSE-160(TM) (160 Gbit/s STS-1 cross-connect) which provides seamless integration An addition of a new application, routine or device that works smoothly with the existing system. Direct fabric interconnect allows simple development of Gigabit Ethernet tributary cards for existing SONET/SDH add/drop multiplexers and cross-connects, enabling data services that have previously required high cost system upgrades.
