PLUM CREEK SELLS COTTONWOOD CREEK TO FOREST SERVICE

PLUM CREEK SELLS COTTONWOOD CREEK TO FOREST SERVICE
COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Calling it "right for the resource and in the public interest," Plum Creek Rocky Mountain Region Vice President Charlie Grenier today announced Plum Creek will sell 2,500 acres in the Cottonwood Creek drainage south of Bozeman, Mont., to the U.S. Forest Service.
"There comes a time in any negotiation to review your objectives and assess your progress," Grenier said. "While we believe the Forest Service's offer of $1.2 million undervalues our timber holdings in the Cottonwood drainage, we have decided it is time to get this land into public ownership and move forward.
"We evaluated this sale just as we would any other sale or exchange: What is best for the resource, what is fair to the company, and what best meets the public interest? This sale is simply the right thing to do under the circumstances," Grenier said.
"As Plum Creek moves forward with its principles of Environmental Forestry, we hope that our sacrificing some of our private interest for the public's greater interest will demonstrate that we are indeed basing our resource decisions on what is right for the resource balanced against both private needs and public demands." Grenier concluded, "We hope the public ownership of these lands, combined with the recently acquired access at the mouth of Cottonwood, will provide the Bozeman area with an exceptional recreation area."
