SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Voters head to the polls today to elect a slew of leaders, from presidential candidates to Superior Court judges.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for those who haven't already voted absentee or taken advantage of the new touch-screen voting at the Valencia Library, a system that saw only lukewarm luke·warm

Those who do not know where to vote can log on to www.lavote.net for polling places, ballot measure and other information. That Web site also will carry the latest election results beginning at 8 tonight.

Voters will choose presidential candidates to challenge George Bush in the November general election and elect a Democratic challenger who will face U.S. Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, in November. The challengers are Fred ``Tim'' Willoughby and Bob Conaway. Also on the ballot are the local state Senate and Assembly seats.

Four state bond measures appear on the ballot, including a school bond measure eyed in Santa Clarita as a means of funding new schools and renovating existing ones.

Locally, the highest profile race is for the seat held by Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San , who faces challenges from Lynne Plambeck, president of the Newhall County Water District Board and Pasadena foster mother Linda Jordan. District Attorney Steve Cooley Stephen Lawrence ("Steve") Cooley (born May 1, 1947 in Los Angeles, California) is a veteran prosecutor who was elected as Los Angeles County's 36th District Attorney on November 7, 2000. He was sworn in for his second term on December 6, 2004.  faces challenges from five candidates and a possible run-off in November.

Also on the ballot are 10 nonpartisan judicial seats as well as seats on the political parties' central committees for the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .
