JOAN OSBORNE places a timely twist on decades-old soul gems on her latest record and makes such classics as Edwin Starr's ``War'' seem fresh as today's headlines.

Q: What was the concept here?

I looked for songs that had relevance to what's happening in the world today - things that are on people's minds. We've been attacked as a country and we're looking to spend more time on things that are important. People are re-examining their lives and have a greater sense of community and appreciation for each other. And luckily, there's this treasure trove TREASURE TROVE. Found treasure.

of material from the flowering of soul music in the '60s and '70s where at the time, there was the same sort of feeling of danger in the air. So, the songs made sense for today.

Q: It must've been difficult even considering covering Aretha, Stevie Wonder or the Spinners. Aren't the originals sort of definitive?

We realized those records were amazing and couldn't be topped and that freed us to take some liberties and make the songs sound fresh. When you hear them this way, you hear the lyrics again and think about their meaning. I was initially nervous about the reaction because I'm covering sacred texts. I thought I was gonna get creamed. But the response has been incredible.

Q: You appeared in the forthcoming documentary, ``Standing in the Shadows of Motown,'' where you're backed on stage by many of the original Detroit session greats. How was that?

I was so honored and excited to be part of that experience. To play in Detroit with those guys was unforgettable. These are legendary musicians who didn't get the credit they deserved at the time and hopefully their time has come.
