PLAYING WITH MONEY VAN NUYS HIGH JUNIORS DOUBLE VIRTUAL $100,000 PORTFOLIO WHILE PLAYING THE STOCK MARKET GAME.

Byline: JULIA M. SCOTT Staff Writer

Instead of hiring a slick stockbroker to manage your cash, consider five whiz kids “Whiz Kids” redirects here. For other uses, see Whiz Kids (disambiguation).
The Whiz Kids were ten United States Army Air Forces veterans of World War II who became Ford Motor Company executives in 1946.

They were led by their commanding officer, Charles B.
from Van Nuys High School Van Nuys High School (VNHS) established in 1914, is a high school in the Van Nuys area of Los Angeles, California, belonging to the Los Angeles Unified School District: District 2. .

The team of five juniors more than doubled a virtual $100,000 portfolio while playing the Stock Market Game. In the game -- which is used to teach economics, government and U.S. history -- teams from area high schools track real stocks and rack up fees just like a real trader. But the cash is just on the computer.

Starting in September, the Van Nuys juniors built their investment up to $216,355.24 during the fall semester. They beat out 4,258 teams in California and 1,722 in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area, including a handful of teams composed of their classmates Classmates can refer to either:

  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
.

Unless another team earns more cash in the spring semester, when the game is played again, the Van Nuys team and its teacher will win a four-day trip to New York City New York City: see New York, city.

led the Van Nuys team using an unorthodox approach.

``He violated everything I told him to do at the beginning of the game,'' said their teacher, Robert Shaw Robert Shaw may refer to:
  • Robert Shaw (bishop) (d. 1527), Scottish monk and prelate
  • Robert Shaw (footballer), an Australian rules football player
  • Robert Shaw (actor), an English actor
  • Robert B. Shaw, a United States poet.
, who saw his other students take first, second, third and fourth place in the Los Angeles area. ``I told them to buy three or four (stocks) and stick to them.''

Instead, the winning team invested in sketchy companies and traded nearly every day, racking up $39,000 in fees. At first, they bought stock in companies they knew, such as Apple, Sony and Google. But a few bad days left them $7,000 in the hole.

``After we lost the money, we were more careful about what we bought,'' said Tina Manukyan, 16, of North Hollywood.

Boris, Tina and their teammates, Hansoo Na, 16, Sally Park, 17, and Peter Kim, 16, all of Los Angeles, read newspapers and tracked financial headlines. They researched companies they were considering investing in and scanned stock prices going back five years.

Shaw, their teacher, taught the game on Mondays, but the students met at lunch other days to make decisions.

While scanning stocks one day, Boris spotted a Chinese software development company called E Future.

``It was performing very well,'' said Boris, who wants to study business in college. ``In one day, it went up 300percent. We waited. Two more days, and it went up another 100percent.''

The teens purchased 45,500 shares over four weeks at a starting price starting price n (COMM) → precio inicial

of $11 each. Later, they cashed in at $39 a share, earning a whopping $105,491. That put them in top place when the game ended Dec.15.

The team's strategy might have actually been blind luck, said Nadia Allaudin, a wealth manager at Merrill Lynch Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MER TYO: 8675 ), through its subsidiaries and affiliates, provides capital markets services, investment banking and advisory services, wealth management, asset management, insurance, banking and related products and services on a global basis. , which sponsored the game along with the Daily News.

``You have to have a process,'' Allaudin said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
if when they set out they had a process, or they might have had pure luck.''

The other teams in Shaw's class seemed to think their peers had lady luck with them. Only a handful said they would invest real dollars in the stock market.

``Too risky,'' said Sira Manukyan, 16, from Panorama City -- no relation to classmate Tina Manukyan. ``What if you lose a lot? It's kind of risky.''

If students invest for real after playing the game, which is backed by the securities industry, the economy will benefit, says Maria Suggett, who oversees the game in five western states.

``There's a negative saving rate. Pensions are collapsing,'' Suggett said. ``So we'll have a stronger economy if our kids, including us, have to create our own retirement plan.''

At least one of Shaw's students started investing because of the game.
