and reserve defensive tackle Jess Ward face suspension for the Sept. 2 season opener against Utah after both pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault Tuesday in connection to a February altercation.

Neither Hale nor Ward were disciplined when felony charges were filed in May. At the time, both players professed their innocence in regards to an altercation that took place in the Running Springs home of Ward's parents.

However, after both players pleaded no contest in San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

``Both of the student-athletes changed to enter the (plea) to avoid the extreme costs of fighting this through to the end,'' said Michael Berger, Hale's lawyer.

Berger said court and attorneys' fees would have been in the tens of thousands of dollars apiece had Ward and Hale continued with the case.

Ward, from Rim of the World High, is expected to play a backup role after redshirting last season.

UCLA has yet to release disciplinary measures against either player, but Dorrell's track record suggests both will be suspended for a game. During Dorrell's three seasons in Westwood, a player's arrest and guilty plea to a misdemeanor count led to a one-game suspension.

Although Hale and Ward both pleaded no contest, which is different from a guilty plea, a source close to the players said each anticipated being suspended for the Utah game.

Linebacker is an area of concern for the Bruins, and not having the experienced Hale would be a blow.

Korey Bosworth, a redshirt freshman, is listed as UCLA's backup at strong-side linebacker. Junior Fred Holmes is third string.

The other two defendants in the case, Casey Coniglio and Franco Serrato, also pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge, were fined and put on probation, Berger said.

The charges stemmed from a Feb. 19 altercation in which Ward and Hale said they were trying to move a fight outside from inside the house.

Ward and Hale were not charged for more than two months after the altercation.
