PLAYBOY JAZZ FESTIVAL ESTABLISHES SCHOOL GRANT FUND TO ASSIST MUSIC PROGRAMS IN SOUTH CENTRAL LOS ANGELES

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Playboy Jazz Festival has established a school grant fund targeted to aiding music programs at the high school level in the schools of South Central Los Angeles, it was announced by Richard Rosenzweig, executive vice president, Playboy Enterprises Inc. and president, Playboy Jazz Festivals.
Rosenzweig said, "Playboy has had a long history of bringing jazz music to the communities of greater Los Angeles through its annual series of free community events preceding the June Playboy Jazz Festival. In particular, we have worked closely with the school system and the residents of the inner city areas.
"This new program of grants permits us to foster musical education and performance in schools whose programs have suffered from budgetary cutbacks and whose students have been impacted by the civil unrest which occurred during 1992."
Rosenzweig said that a jazz combo from Los Angeles' Washington High School, the first school to apply for an award under the new program, will perform at the annual Playboy Jazz Festival news conference, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Playboy Mansion. Washington High School, which will also open this year's Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, has proposed to use its grant to produce a compact disc recording of student performers.
Don Dustin, director of the Los Angeles Unified School District Music Department, said, "Playboy has come up with a unique and innovative way in which to show its support of our city's schools and their students.
"As a music educator, I am well aware of how much the encouragement and financial assistance of such a prestigious event as the Playboy Jazz Festival can mean to the talented young musicians of South Central.
"We are all both appreciative and grateful to Playboy for their generous donation and their continued support of public school music and jazz education."
The high school grant program will be administered jointly by the Playboy Jazz Festival and the Los Angeles Unified School District Music Department and is open to secondary schools in South Central Los Angeles with music programs. Among the purposes to which grant funds may be used are participation in clinics and workshops led by professional jazz artists, developing personal and ensemble performance skills, attending selected jazz performances, developing and performing a variety of jazz repertoire representative of the different periods an styles in America, developing and producing a recording of the All South Central Jazz Band and presenting performances for students in middle and elementary schools. Schools interested in participating in this pilot program should begin the program by contacting Dustin.
The Playboy Jazz Festival, which will celebrate the its 15th season at the Hollywood Bowl with two days of jazz entertainment on the weekend of June 12 and 13, is a presentation of Playboy Jazz Festivals and is produced by Festival Productions Inc.
