PLAY WEDS ROMANCE, LAUGHTER : THE FACTS.

Byline: Victoria Giraud Special to the Daily News

Is there still hope for some excitement and renewed interest when a marriage is 23 years old? ``Weekend Comedy,'' now on the boards at Stage Door, explores just that and offers up lots of laughs in the process.

Frank and Peggy have rented a cabin in the Catskill Mountains Catskill Mountains, dissected plateau of the Appalachian Mt. system, SE N.Y., W of the Hudson River. This glaciated region, wooded and rolling, with deep gorges and many waterfalls, is drained by the headstreams of the Delaware River and by Esopus, Schoharie,  for a Memorial Day weekend getaway in hopes of renewing some interest in each other - at least that's what Peggy (a classy class·y

Frank, a delectable role for Mike Monteleone, is an unromantic worry-wart - reliable, but set in his ways. ``All we can do is eat and have sex,'' he says with chagrin, looking at his wife in her sexy red negligee.

Just when Peggy has enticed Frank enough to consider some marital bliss, another couple shows up claiming that they've rented the cabin. Tony (an appealing David Druxman) and Jill (the beguiling Gina Lyn Ippolito) are a stylish, upscale young couple in their 20s who are visiting their favorite getaway to celebrate three years of living together.

An argument ensues, with Frank and Peggy winning out since they got there first. Graciously gra·cious

The contrasts between the couples bring out the best and worst in each. The men, fighting like stallions, want to prove themselves right in the age-old battle of young vs. old.
