PLATINUM upgrades suite of DB2 utilities, announces new utility.OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 1995--PLATINUM technology, inc., today announced three additions to its database utility product line: PLATINUM Fast Unload 1.3, a comprehensive upgrade for efficiently unloading DB2 data directly from tablespaces or from image copies; PLATINUM Fast Check, a new DB2 utility that monitors and controls the consistency of DB2 databases; and PLATINUM Rapid Reorg Reorg (or Corporate Action or Reorganization) Any transaction involving the issuance of stock or cash, or the cancellation of stock tendered by a shareholder, such as in the case of a merger, acquisition or tender offer. 4.1, an upgrade that significantly improves high speed data reorganization. ``Reliable, high-performance database systems are crucial to today's enterprise,'' said Paul Humenansky, executive vice president of software development and COO. ``PLATINUM's strategy is to continue providing DBAs with utilities to efficiently manage their data.'' These additions are the first of several product-line wide enhancements scheduled for 1995. Additional upgrades will be announced as enhancements for DB2 Version 4 become available later this year. PLATINUM Fast Unload 1.3 Features and Benefits PLATINUM Fast Unload 1.3 provides accelerated access to DB2 data to help database administrators (DBAs) and application programmers facilitate easy loading of data into other DB2 tables, client/server database, and other hardware platforms Each hardware platform, or CPU family, has a unique machine language. All software presented to the computer for execution must be in the binary coded machine language of that CPU. Following is a list of the major hardware platforms in existence today. See platform. . Fast Unload uses multitasking multitasking Mode of computer operation in which the computer works on multiple tasks at the same time. A task is a computer program (or part of a program) that can be run as a separate entity. to provide optional performance for unloading multiple tables in one pass of the data. In addition, Fast Unload 1.3 provides the following new features and benefits: - Boasts significant performance improvements by utilizing advanced VSAM (Virtual Storage Access Method) An IBM access method for storing data, widely used in IBM mainframes. It uses the B+tree method for organizing data. VSAM - Virtual Storage Access Method I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output techniques or EXCP EXCP - Execute Channel Program processing. Performance improvements of 86% in elapsed time e·lapsed time n. The measured duration of an event. Noun 1. elapsed time - the time that elapses while some event is occurring and 95% in CPU time The amount of time it takes for the CPU to execute a set of instructions and generally excludes the waiting time for input and output. CPU time - processor time compared to IBM's DSNTIAUL program. - Supports multitasking at both the partition and tablespace level. Allows DBA to unload multiple tablespace partitions concurrently to either a single or multiple output datasets. - Improves performance over the previous release by as much as 60%. Fast Check 1.0 Features and Benefits PLATINUM Fast Check monitors and controls the consistency of DB2 databases. Users can check both system-defined and user-defined referential structures to identify inconsistencies and ensure data integrity. Furthermore, Fast Check reports all errors in the tablespace or index from within a single execution of the product. In addition, Fast Check provides the following features and benefits: - Compares index entries against corresponding table data and reports inconsistencies while verifying data integrity. - Yields performance improvements of 82% in elapsed time and 79% in CPU time compared to IBM's Check Data. - Interfaces to PLATINUM's RI Manager making it easy to view, create, modify, and delete system and user-defined RI relationships. PLATINUM Rapid Reorg 4.1 Features and Benefits PLATINUM Rapid Reorg 4.1 performs rapid and automatic reorganizations of DB2 tablespace and indexes. It can collect statistics and create image copies while a tablespace is being reorganized. Rapid Reorg Version 4.1 expands on previous reorganization functionality by adding several new features, including: - Read-only access to data enabling query capability while reorg is occurring. - Interleave To intersperse one after the other. See sector interleave and memory interleaving. interleave - interleaving capability improves data access time by allowing user to interleave data rows for multiple tables as they are reorganized. - Significant performance improvements over the previous version of Rapid Reorg and up to 66% improvement in elapsed time and 81% in CPU time over the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) DB2 V3.1 REORG utility. Rite-Aid Prescribes PLATINUM Utilities At Rite-Aid Corporation, a pharmaceutical retail chain with headquarters in Camp Hill, PA, provides its pharmacies with 24 hour on-line prescription capability as part of its services to its clients. With up to 160 transactions per second In a very generic sense, the term Transactions Per Second refers to the number of atomic actions performed by certain entity per second. In a more restrictied view, the term is usually used by DBMS vendor and user community to refer to the number of database transactions performed , a key to the company's success is the ability to have information available to the stores 24-hours-per-day, 7-days-per-week. ``Keeping that information organized is critical for us to meet our performance objectives,'' said Brian Doran, database administrator at Rite-Aid. ``We have at most a two hour window each day to complete as many reorgs as possible. Rapid Reorg 4.1 surpassed our expectations -- it reduced the time required for data reorganization by 30% over the previous version of Rapid Reorg, allowing us to meet our goals.'' Pricing and Availability PLATINUM Fast Unload 1.3 is currently commercially available. Both PLATINUM Fast Check and PLATINUM Rapid Reorg 4.1 will be commercially available June 30th. Pricing for each utility begins at $18,234 and varies by CPU size. PLATINUM's database management tools help organizations operate their databases more efficiently, thus reducing costs and providing users with easier access to critical information on an enterprise-wide scale. PLATINUM tools, which work with DB2, Oracle7, SYBASE SQL Server Sybase SQL Server - Adaptive Server Enterprise , DB2/6000, DB2/2, and Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. , and Informix are used by Fortune 1000 companies all over the world.
