PLATINUM technology revolutionizes application development for corporate Intranets; object-oriented tool set supports entire software development lifecycle for enterprise Intranet applications.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1996--In a move to integrate object-oriented enterprise application development with corporate Intranets, PLATINUM technology Platinum Technology Inc. was founded by Andrew Filipowski in 1987 to market and support deployment of Database Management software products and the applications enabled by database management technology and render related services. , inc. today released Netcessities -- the first comprehensive tool set that enables professional developers to model, build, test, and deploy enterprise-wide Intranet applications. PLATINUM's Netcessities provides the flexibility to apply well-established application development techniques and technology to an Intranet.

Netcessities is the only tool set that offers a complete and open solution for delivering mission-critical applications over an Intranet, emphasizing object-oriented technologies and sophisticated database access -- from analysis and design, through construction, testing, and deployment. Netcessities is the unique result of integration between and enhancements to PLATINUM Application Lifecycle Solution products that support the following lifecycle stages:

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Paradigm Plus PARADIGM PLUS - A configurable object-oriented CASE tool from Proto Soft.  -- the most flexible object-oriented analysis and design Object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) is a software engineering approach that models a system as a group of interacting objects. Each object represents some entity of interest in the system being modeled, and is characterised by its class, its state (data elements), and its  tool on the market;

CONSTRUCTION

ObjectPro -- an object-oriented development environment that generates C, C++, OCX/ActiveX, VBX (Visual Basic EXtension) A component software technology from Microsoft that enabled a Visual Basic (Windows) program to add functionality by calling ready-made software modules. , and Netscape Plug-Ins;

SQL-Coder -- a comprehensive tool for building, debugging (programming) debugging - The process of attempting to determine the cause of the symptoms of malfunctions in a program or other system. These symptoms may be detected during testing or use by real users. , and managing server-side database code and objects;

 Web-based applications.

"We are looking forward to the Netcessities release because it gives our customers the chance to extend their existing applications to their Intranets," said Larry Michalski, principal, Object Advantage. "ObjectPro's object-oriented features gracefully support distributed client/server architectures. Now, with the integration of Paradigm Plus and Final Exam, object-oriented software development processes are supported as well."

Flexible deployment options leave developers free to focus on the application. Applications can be deployed at run-time as either ActiveX or Netscape Plug-Ins for easy integration with widely used Internet browsers. Netcessities supports either distributed or client deployment of 32-bit applications as ActiveX, OCX (OLE Control EXtension) A component software technology from Microsoft that enables a Windows program to add functionality by calling ready-made components. Generally called "OLE controls" or "OLE custom controls," they appear to the end user as just another part of , Netscape Plug-Ins, C, and C++ implementations; future releases will support Java and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  objects, and additional platforms. Communication protocols are based on standard TCP/IP-based networks with support for ORB-based distribution of application logic.

Netcessities -- the Package

"Effective Intranet and Internet application development requires sound object-oriented technology," said Ed Miller, vice president of PLATINUM's Application Lifecycle Solutions business unit. "Netcessities provides integrated functionality -- from object-oriented modeling Object-Oriented Modeling, or OOM, is a modeling paradigm mainly used in computer programming. Prior to the rise of OOM, the dominant paradigm was functional programming, which emphasised the use of discreet reusable code blocks that could stand on their own, take variables, perform  to testing -- coupled with ease of use. This tool set provides developers with the most flexible deployment options available in the marketplace. The value offered by PLATINUM's Netcessities is unparalleled."

Netcessities is powerful because it draws upon the expansive capabilities of PLATINUM's best-in-class application lifecycle tools. The tool set supports rapid prototyping Building a part one layer at a time using a method of additive fabrication such as 3D printing. Such parts are used for concept modeling to determine if the product design meets the customer's expectations.  with round-trip engineering Round-trip engineering is a functionality of software development tools that provides generation of models from source code and generation of source code from models; this way, existing source code can be converted into a model, be subjected to software engineering methods and then , easy to use object-oriented construction facilities, database programming, and automated client/server testing. This strategy delivers the functionality required by mission-critical business applications. The tool set is open so that developers can include other technologies or tools, or even replace a Netcessities provided tool with a preferred substitute.

Paradigm Plus

The premier tool for object-oriented analysis and design, Paradigm Plus opens a window into the structure of object-oriented programs from stored models. Its powerful feature set, such as automatic code generation, enables users to lay the groundwork for even the most complex Intranet applications quickly and easily. By visualizing software components, users can reverse engineer existing components and forward engineer new component models. This round-trip engineering lets users fine-tune the object model and code while maintaining project consistency. The tool also offers forward engineering for Java.

ObjectPro

A robust, object-oriented development tool that supports business objects, user interface objects, and database objects, ObjectPro significantly enhances developer productivity. At execution time, performance is unsurpassed due to the C++ code generation. On the front end, its interpretive development environment makes it easy to learn. On the back end, it features powerful database hooks to leverage legacy investment. It permits client-side, distributed, and server-side Internet deployment from the same source.

SQL-Coder

SQL-Coder provides the functionality to support programming on the database server -- it allows developers to create, manage, test, and deploy server-side database objects, such as triggers, stored procedures, and scripts. The tool provides an interactive, multiple server, database programming environment that lets developers reverse engineer existing database objects, and store revisions of database objects as they are changed. Database objects can be organized and deployed by project, allowing for easy association with Object Pro applications.

Final Exam

Final Exam is a full-featured automated testing environment that supports and validates object-oriented GUI and HTML Web-based applications utilizing multiple verification methods. Netcessities fully supports high level verification of ObjectPro ReportWindows. The object-oriented record/playback feature lets developers identify HTML objects such as hyperlinks and submit buttons. Developers can run regression tests unattended and automatically, and in conjunction, use the browser to synchronize replay providing powerful Wizards to verify the data in HTML tables.

Pricing and Availability

Netcessities Workgroup Edition is now available for Windows 95, and is competitively priced at $2,995 per license. The analysis/design and construction components also support Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. .
