PLATINUM technology provides job scheduling software for NASA's Earth Observing System; PLATINUM AutoSys was selected for Hughes Information Technology Corporation's work with NASA on the mission to planet Earth's computer system.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 1996--

AutoSys will be used in the EOSDIS EOSDIS Earth Observing System Data and Information System  Core System (ECS See eComStation. ) project

which will process and analyze global environmental data

PLATINUM technology Platinum Technology Inc. was founded by Andrew Filipowski in 1987 to market and support deployment of Database Management software products and the applications enabled by database management technology and render related services. , inc., today announced the implementation of PLATINUM AutoSys job scheduling In a large computer, establishing a job queue to run a sequence of programs over any period of time such as a single shift, a full day, etc.  software in a project that will help scientists better understand the global environment. The software will be used in NASA's program called the Earth Observing System The Earth Observing System (EOS) is a program of NASA comprising a series of artificial satellite missions and scientific instruments in Earth orbit designed for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans of the Earth. . For the project, a complex network of Earth-orbiting satellites and Earth-bound test sites will collect terabytes of data on the Earth's atmosphere “Air” redirects here. For other uses, see Air (disambiguation).

Earth's atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding the planet Earth and retained by the Earth's gravity. It contains roughly (by molar content/volume) 78% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.
, tides, ocean currents, and land conservation status. The satellites will then transmit the data to eight UNIX-based Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), part of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) in the United States. Upon receiving the data files, AutoSys will automatically initiate computer job streams that index, process, distribute, and analyze data to determine vital information about global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, and other environmental changes. AutoSys also will be used to manage the jobs that organize the data into final reports.

It's rewarding to be part of a project that helps protect our Earth's environment," said Andrew "Flip" Filipowski, PLATINUM's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "Those who know PLATINUM know that we've been very active in efforts to preserve the Earth and wildlife. To that end, we established our own wildlife foundation eight years ago and we continue to expand our efforts. We are proud to have AutoSys chosen as the UNIX UNIX

"Because of its state-of-the-art capabilities, AutoSys provides the caliber of technology that we require for a project like this. This is a product and a company that we know that we can rely on, unconditionally," said Bob Horrigan, Program Manager for the Electronic Data System (EDS (Electronic Data Systems, Plano, TX, www.eds.com) Founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot (independent candidate for the President of the U.S. in 1992), EDS is the largest outsourcing and data processing services organization in the country. ) component of the EOSDIS Core System (ECS) Team. EDS is the hardware and software procurer for the ECS working with Hughes Information Technology Corporation (HITC HITC Hughes Information Technology Corporation

), the project's prime contractor.

PLATINUM's AutoSys, and a recently announced companion product called AutoXpert, are leading job management tools for distributed UNIX environments. AutoSys automates data center processing and supports dynamic load balancing; business calendaring fault tolerance; centralized control of distributed processing; automatic restart and error-recovery; and integration with SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. .

AutoXpert, released in June 1995, provides various graphical views of complex job environments. These graphical user interfaces, which combine historic, real-time, and simulated information, help system administrators better understand, plan, monitor, and troubleshoot complex job flows.
