 and mortgage-loan officer Brett Dillenberg invested $40,000 of their own money to start a mortgage brokerage company. That first year, they closed only 29 loans and lost $108,000.

Things have changed.

This year they will have written 5,000 mortgages. Revenues have gone from $7.6 million in 1996 to $23.3 million in 1998. And what was once a three-man operation has been transformed into a six-office company that employs 175 people.

The mortgage firm also has agreements with five large companies, which offer their employees favorable loan rates with Platinum as part of their benefits packages.

While Dillenberg works in Manhattan Beach, Chief Executive Mark Moses, 35, works in Irvine, where his office specializes in an overlooked market - real-estate-secured consumer loans. The company offers home-improvement and debt-consolidation loans nationwide via direct mail and telemarketing.
