PLATINUM ACQUIRES RELTECH GROUP, INC.; Repository Technology Strengthens PLATINUM's Data Warehousing & Systems Management Initiatives.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 1995--PLATINUM technology, inc., (NASDAQ: PLAT) today announced the acquisition of RelTech Group, Inc. of Fairfax, Va., a leader in relational-based data repository software products.

The acquisition of RelTech advances PLATINUM's strategy to become a leader in the data warehousing business. The RelTech repository technology also will help PLATINUM offer repository enabled system software products necessary to manage the heterogeneous computing environments that are found in most corporations today.

Effective today, RelTech became a wholly owned subsidiary of PLATINUM technology, inc. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

PLATINUM is currently reviewing both the BrownStone and RelTech repository offerings, and will soon announce engineering plans and timing for an integration strategy. The goal will be a best-of-breed repository offering called the PLATINUM Objectory, which will serve as the heart of PLATINUM's P.O.E.M.S. systems management architecture and as the metadata brain of the PLATINUM Warehouse, the company's data warehousing schema.

A major challenge for IT managers will be to construct data warehouses for the Open Enterprise Environment (OEE) -- the networked computing environment that includes MVS-, UNIX-, and Windows-based platforms and may also include VMS, AS400, and OS/2 systems. The development of PLATINUM Warehouse, the company's data warehousing architecture, aims to solve the need for a total warehousing solution by offering an integrated suite of products and professional consulting services that enable customers to meet the demand of third party data warehouse integration.

PLATINUM will use RelTech's and the newly acquired BrownStone Solutions' repository technology to create a central object repository (objectory) for systems management information, including metadata about all operational and warehouse systems, as well as all objects required to manage heterogeneous computing environments. This objectory will tie all systems management and data warehousing activities together. Additionally, the RelTech Services Group will be a fundamental part of data warehouse consulting in PLATINUM's newly formed professional services division.

For accounting purposes, the transaction is being handled under the purchase method. PLATINUM technology anticipates allocating a significant portion of the purchase price to acquired in-process technology, resulting in a charge to the Company's operations in the first quarter of 1995.
