 PLASTIC BOTTLE RECYCLING GAINS GROUND, FINDS NEW USES
 SOUTH BEND, Ind., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 4 billion


plastic water, juice and milk bottles are discarded annually in the United States, according to industry figures.
 To date, only a small percentage (14 percent in 1991) are recycled as part of municipal curbside or drop-off programs for processing into the small pellets that can then be used to manufacture new products.
 "Recycling of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers is one of the fastest growing areas of plastics recycling," said Scott Fritschel, environmental programs manager, Du Pont Company, Wilmington, Del. "There are numerous applications for post consumer plastic that make a lot of sense."
 Du Pont (NYSE: DD) is one of several companies that recycle discarded plastic jugs for a variety of new uses. Not the least of these is the production of jugs used for Tidy Scoop(TM), a leading national brand of clumping cat box filler. This is one of the first products of any kind available nationally to be packaged in containers made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled high density polyethylene. The jugs -- gallon milk, juice and water containers in their former "lives" -- are also recyclable.
 Each 7-lb. Tidy Scoop jug contains plastic recovered from two one- gallon containers. The product is part of Golden Cat Corporation's line of Tidy Cat (R) brand cat box fillers. The company is headquartered in South Bend.
 "Post-consumer recycled plastic can be used for a variety of grocery items," said Susan Moore, spokeswoman for the Partnership for Plastics' Progress, a Washington-based plastics industry group. And, according to Golden Cat President and Chief Executive Officer Frank Krum, "It's perfect for cat box fillers. Our products are dense, so they need sturdy packaging that is lightweight but holds up well during shipment. It's easy for consumers to handle and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space at the supermarket," he said.
 Cat owner acceptance of the new clumping litters has been nothing short of phenomenal, according to Krum, whose company makes the top- selling brands in the category. "The market has grown from practically nothing to nearly 30 percent of the cat box filler category in a little over two years. It represents a $90 million business and the packaging is crucial."
 Packaging using 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic can be more expensive than that using a smaller percentage of recycled material. For this reason, containers for household products such as detergents typically use some, but not 100 percent, recycled resin. "Unless the product manufacturer absorbs the cost differential, as Golden Cat is doing, some consumers won't purchase products in more expensive recycled plastic containers," said Joseph Borden, president of Texberry Container Corporation, Houston. Texberry manufactures recycled containers for a range of consumer products including automotive, chemical, and agricultural items.
 "There appear to be more people who profess to want recycled materials than there are those willing to pay for them," Borden said. In fact, surveys bear this fact out, according to Moore of the Partnership for Plastics' Progress. Uncolored recycled plastic containers, such as the one Texberry makes for Tidy Scoop, offer another benefit, Du Pont's Fritschel said. They can be recycled into other uncolored containers. "This helps alleviate some of the load on our waste streams," he continued, "and saves on resources, energy and, in the long run, money. We think it's definitely the way to go."
