A massive medical relief effort is being coordinated by Plantation General Hospital to assist the victims of Hurricane Andrew. A caravan of approximately 20 vehicles escorted by two Plantation Police Department vehicles and Life Fleet Ambulance will depart from Plantation General Hospital on Saturday morning at 6 a.m.
So far, over 150 health care employees including doctors, nurses, technicians, and non-clinical volunteers have offered their services on Saturday and/or Sunday. Many of these volunteers are planning to stay in the field overnight to provide as much time and assistance as possible.
Over 100 boxes of medical supplies including antiseptics, antibiotics, bandages, gauze pads etc..., as well as baby needs such as diapers and formula have been donated by the medical staff of Plantation General Hospital. Employees of Plantation General Hospital have collected over 150 boxes of food and clothing to be shipped to Dade County and more is expected. An additional 10 loads of food and clothing were provided for employees of Plantation General Hospital for themselves or their families who have been directly effected by Hurricane Andrew.
This effort has been coordinated by Val Jackson, associate administrator of Plantation General Hospital. According to Jackson, "This massive relief effort is just part of the ongoing commitment Plantation General Hospital has taken prior to and since Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida. On Sunday we housed 150 patients who were within 30 days of expected delivery, and we have been accepting patients from a variety of hospitals and nursing homes in Dade and Broward County. We have also assisted the Broward County Public Health System with water and nasal cannulas. Our massive medical relief effort is a major part of our commitment to our neighbors in Dade County. The efforts of our employees, medical staff, and volunteers have been outstanding in making this massive medical relief effort possible."
