PLANS SCRAPPED FOR PRACTICE FIELD.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo

Galaxy president Tim Leiweke canceled plans to build a practice facility at the Rose Bowl.

Leiweke withdrew his proposal at a Rose Bowl Operating Committee meeting Thursday night because of the stadium's lack of movement on the construction and the added cost of building the new field in parking lot area H. Leiweke was not available for comment Friday.

Galaxy general manager Sergio Del Prado said Rose Bowl officials wanted the Galaxy to pay the cost of replacing parking stalls, in addition to picking up the bill for the practice site.

There was also no word on when the practice site would be built.

``First of all, we are very disappointed this didn't work out,'' Del Prado said. ``It is most disappointing to our players because of all the promises we made to them and the coaching staff that we would get this done.

``Unfortunately, this is something they have heard before and we are back to square one and looking for alternatives.''

For a temporary training facility, Del Prado confirmed that the Galaxy will be looking at a vacant school in Altadena on Monday. Earlier this year, the Galaxy toured facilities at Azusa Pacific University and Mount San Antonio College. Prior to agreeing with the Rose Bowl to build a practice facility, the Galaxy was leaning toward Mt. SAC as a possible site.

Since purchasing the team for $26 million last October, billionaire Philip F. Anschutz already has provided the Galaxy with a new weight room, office space and re-constructed locker room at the Rose Bowl - at an estimated cost of $500,000.

The cost to build the new practice facility was estimated to be in the $250,000 range. However, the Galaxy learned the Rose Bowl Bowl wanted Los Angeles to pay an additional $200,000 to $250,000 to replace parking spaces that would be lost for UCLA football.

Uncertain how long the team's tenure would last at the Rose Bowl, Leiweke decided not to spend a half million on the project when the Galaxy could conceivably leave and build its own stadium in the next few years.
