PLANS IN NEWHALL EXCITE ENGINEER.

Byline: Victoria Giraud People and Places

Frank Maga, chairman of the Newhall Redevelopment Committee, believes downtown Newhall will he completely renovated within the next five years.

``Newhall has a lot going for it,'' said Maga, who has headed the agency for just over a year. ``It's smaller than Old Pasadena was, and it's not deteriorated as much. We caught it before it really hit bottom.''

The city of Santa Clarita's widening of Railroad Avenue and the development of the Metrolink station are two crucial elements of the redevelopment plan. Railroad Avenue will divert the truck traffic, and San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  can be narrowed and made more conducive to pedestrian traffic.

The Metrolink station will become a ``hub to draw people in during the week to specialty niche shops not found in the typical mall,'' he said.

Organizers expect to see specialty clothiers along with shops featuring Indian jewelry and artifacts artifacts

``We're getting it going. We're going to create a unique little shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into  with access to everybody in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. ,'' Maga said. ``It's not moving as fast as we want, but nothing ever does.''

The committee wants downtown Newhall to have the historical look of late 19th and early 20th centuries, which would mean buildings with facades styled in Spanish Colonial, Western and Victorian styles. The fact that the downtown area is adjacent to Hart Park and Heritage Junction is a definite plus.

``We can tie them all together,'' Maga said, adding that proponents plan to have a tram system that will take visitors to nearby locations like Melody Ranch and Placerita Canyon. ``There's a wealth of potential.''

Special events in Newhall, as well as a farmer's market, will also be drawing cards. The committee is hoping that Newhall will become a destination for visitors.

The owner of a commercial building at San Fernando Road and Market, Maga got involved with redevelopment because he ``has the time and the energy to go to all the meetings,'' and because ``basically, I wanted things to happen.''

``I barely got through English,'' Maga said, laughing. ``The last thing I ever thought I'd be is an editor and publisher.''

Maga said he likes living in the tiny area of 800 registered voters. ``There are 3,000 lots, half of them with homes, half of those are weekend people.''

His home, at a 6,000-foot elevation, is big enough for a private office and his secretary lives a block away. It was she who interested the Magas in the area, which has a golf course, stables and a general store among its amenities.

``It's a good social life, the people are friendly, and you know everybody,'' Maga said.

Even though he enjoyed his career in engineering, Maga said the Newhall redevelopment is more exciting.

He's looking forward to getting Newhall ``back on its feet and making it look good.'' Maga compliments Santa Clarita officials for their ``phenomenal job'' and feels that a redeveloped Newhall ``will add sparkle to the city. It will be a jewel in the city's eye.''
