Making it the biggest arena in West Texas, Ciudad Juarez and Southern New Mexico, and making it the biggest arena in El Paso above the Don Haskins .

But firm negotiations never materialized, and by the time talks resumed recently, it was too late for USC to change the site, or print new ticke ts for the contest.

The move from the Sports Arena would not have been much of an adjustment for USC. The Trojans have played just three nonconference home games this season, entering Wednesday's home game against Northwestern, and held only one practice at the facility.

Better shooting: USC has begun to find its shooting touch af ter a rough start. Point guard Brandon Granville has made 10 of his past 16 3- pointers (62.5 percent) after starting the season making only 10 of 52 (23.1).

``I still feel the same as before,'' Granville said. ``But I have been s hooting better.''

The Trojans have made 38 of 94 of their 3-point attempts (40.4 percent) the past five games, after hitting just 23 of 97 (23.7) the first six games.

New strategy: After Long Beach State surprised the Trojans, and limited forward Brian Scalabrine Brian David Scalabrine (born March 18 1978 in Long Beach, California) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Boston Celtics of the NBA. A 6'9", 235 lbs.  to four points by double-teaming him, USC made a simple but critical adjustment before playing San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State last week.

Scalabrine was told to be less unselfish and look for his shot first, instead of merely waiting for the double-team to arrive. He scored 21 points against the Aztecs.

``The coaches told me for us to win I have to start shooting the ball,'' Scalabrine said. ``I really wasn't shooting before.''

Bibby doesn't think Scalabrine will face too many double-teams the rest of the season.

``We attacked their double-team,'' Bibby said. ``Now we know what to do.''

Football update: USC coach Paul Hackett, who said last week he would hire a tight ends coach by Christmas, has decided to wait before making his final selection.

``I'm going to hold off on that spot and see where the next few weeks takes us,'' Hackett said. ``I'm not going to be in any hurry.''
