PLANNING GROUP TOURS VINEYARD.

 - The Regional Planning regional planning: see city planning.  Commission toured Agua Dulce Vineyards and the surrounding area Saturday to understand geography and traffic patterns better before the panel decides to issue permits sought by the vineyard.

On Sept. 8, commissioners heard testimony from both vineyard supporters and those opposing the 15-year conditional use permit - mostly residents of the neighboring Sierra Colony Ranch development - but agreed to continue the hearing Nov. 3 so the commission could gain a better understanding of the issues.

``We wanted to become more familiar with the operations, the traffic patterns, see how this land use (permit) matches with the neighboring communities,'' said Pat Modugno, one of the five commissioners. ``Now we will be able to visually understand, instead of just looking at a map.''

All five commissioners, as well as staff members from the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Department of Regional Planning, took the tour. The 10 guests were shown the vineyards, the water wells and the operations building.

The vineyard, which opened in October 2001, was built without a permit but was granted a a temporary operating permit - called a ``clean-hands'' waiver - until a public hearing could be held.

The vineyard is seeking a 15-year conditional use permit, the terms of which include authorization to relocate the existing building to a new one and to increase wine production from 15,000 gallons to 50,000.

Kevin Johnson Kevin Maurice Johnson (born March 4, 1966 in Sacramento, California) is a retired American basketball point guard who played for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns. , the department's planning assistant, toured the facility Saturday but was careful to avoid any conversation that delved into the future of the permits being sought.

``There was no testimony heard today,'' Johnson said. ``This was an informal field trip for the planning department and the commission. The purpose of this was only to get a better understanding of what it looks like here.''
