On Tuesday night, the trustees declared the 13.4-acre Belwood Elementary School on Kadota Street a surplus property that will now be put on the selling block for a minimum price of $1.2 million. Trustees will open bids April 21.

Operators of the three preschools that have been operating at the Belwood campus for as long as a decade are concerned with the prospect of having to move if the campus is sold. Two churches also operate on the campus.
``I was told that I would be here for a very long time and I put a lot of money in here,'' said Marie Weckhurst, owner of Happy Acre Preschool and Kindergarten.
Weckhurst said the school is in its third year and has 75 students. The other preschools at the Belwood campus are Building Blocks and the Simi Valley Jewish Community Center program.
``We stand to do a lot of hurting, but I really am hopeful that they would provide another space for us,'' Weckhurst said. ``I'm hoping that if (it is sold) that we will be placed in another situation, only because we have a lot of parents and children dependent on us.''
