The call to the FBI that led to the arrest of Irv Rubin Irv Rubin (April 12, 1945 – November 13, 2002) was chairman of the militant Jewish Defense League from 1985 to 2002. Rubin was born in Canada, but after experiencing widespread anti-Semitism in his home city of Montreal, he and his parents and sister moved to the neighborhood  and Earl Krugel Earl Leslie Krugel (November 24, 1942 – November 4, 2005) was the West Coast coordinator of the Jewish Defense League (JDL).

At one time, Krugel was a dental assistant in the San Fernando Valley.

What followed - tracked through tape recordings and heavy surveillance - was a systematic effort to acquire materials for pipe bombs for a plot allegedly aimed at Muslim targets.

Rubin said they lacked the ability to blow up an entire building and warned against hurting people, noting they had come under scrutiny for the unsolved 1985 slaying of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.  building. Krugel reviewed them a few days later while parked at a Ventura Boulevard bagel shop.

On Nov. 8, the informant and Krugel met at Brent's Deli on Parthenia Street and went next door to the Stovepipe bar where the informant was told to get gunpowder.

The planning moved forward and on Friday during a discussion of the timing, Krugel allegedly said Rubin would pay for the bomb's components.

The next day, the informant met Rubin outside a Starbucks in the Valley and was asked whether he had bought ``Unique brand smokeless powder.'' Rubin said he wanted to change the target to a mosque.

On Monday, the informant bought pipes for the bomb at the Home Depot in Woodland Hills and was told by Krugel to buy the end-caps separately.

Tuesday night, the informant met Krugel and Rubin at Jerry's Famous Deli Wikipedia is not the place for advertisement or self-advertising.

Jerry's Famous Deli is a Los Angeles-based delicatessen famous for its huge menu, which boasts over 700 deli and traditional food items.
 in Encino where they dined. Rubin briefly left and returned with papers listing potential bombing targets.

The informant went with Krugel to his home and they unloaded the powder in the garage. The three were supposed to continue their plan Wednesday but federal authorities swept in.
