 PLACKE NAMED PRESIDENT, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER OF CENTERBANK
 WATERBURY, Conn., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert J. Narkis, chairman and chief executive officer of Centerbank (NASDAQ: CTBX) has announced that William H. Placke will be joining Centerbank as president, chief operating officer. Placke will report to Narkis and fills a key position on the executive management team at Centerbank which includes Joseph Carlson II, chief financial officer and Thomas C. Brown, president and chief executive officer of the bank's subsidiary, Centerbank Mortgage Company. In his new position at Centerbank, Placke will be responsible for commercial and consumer lending, community banking, leasing, operations, human resources and marketing.
 Placke comes to Centerbank from Midlantic National Bank based in Edison, N.J., where he was previously executive vice president and senior executive officer in the bank's holding company, Midlantic Corporation, where he was responsible for commercial banking New Jersey.
 Placke joined Midlantic as senior vice president in 1978 after serving 11 years with The First National Bank of Chicago where he was vice president-corporate lending in charge of a variety of lending and managerial activities including servicing the needs of the printing, publishing and paper industries. While at The First National Bank of Chicago, Placke was selected to help establish and operate the bank's New York regional office.
 He was promoted to executive vice president at Midlantic National Bank in 1984 with responsibility for the bank's corporate banking activities -- including national banking, New Jersey corporate banking, financial institutions, special industries, cash management and corporate services and the marketing area. In 1989, Placke was reassigned the responsibility for all retail banking activities at Midlantic National Bank, including its 260 branch network, small business lending, consumer and commercial installment lending and the marketing function.
 In making the announcement, Narkis stated that, "We have been very diligent in the selection process since the position became vacant in August of 1991 and are very pleased to find someone of Mr. Placke's caliber. He has a proven track record of success at Midlantic and will fill a vital role at Centerbank. His leadership skills and experience will be of great value in consolidating our recent acquisitions and in adjusting to the revolutionary changes now occurring in the banking industry."
 Placke is a trustee of the Tri-County Scholarship Fund for the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., and a trustee of the Clara Maass Hospital in Belleville, N.J. He holds a bachelor's degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Univeristy. He and his wife, Beth, have four children.
 With assets of $3 billion, deposits of $2.5 billion and shareholder's equity of $150 million, Centerbank is one of the largest independent financial institutions headquartered in Connecticut.
