PIZZA HUT TO ACQUIRE D'ANGELO SANDWICH SHOPS

WICHITA, Kan., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pizza Hut, Inc. announced today that it will acquire the D'Angelo Sandwich Shop chain of 173 company-owned and franchised restaurants located throughout the Northeast United States. Pizza Hut said that it plans to retain the D'Angelo name and concept and will phase in a Pizza Hut delivery unit into company-owned D'Angelo locations. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
D'Angelo, based in West Bridgewater, Mass., and started in 1967, offers a full range of sandwiches, salads and Chips ice cream at its units throughout the six New England states.
"This acquisition is a great opportunity for both D'Angelo and Pizza Hut," said Allan S. Huston, president and chief executive officer of Pizza Hut Worldwide. "Our pizza delivery business is growing rapidly and the expansion of D'Angelo's current delivery network to include Pizza Hut pizza offers us an excellent platform from which to expand that service to our customers in the Northeast," Huston said.
Brian McLaughlin, founder and chairman of D'Angelo, will remain chief operating officer of the chain, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Pizza Hut. McLaughlin will report to Pat Williamson, Pizza Hut's chief operating officer. Principals Jay Howland and James "Chip" McLaughlin also will remain with D'Angelo.
"We are delighted to add Brian and his team's extensive understanding of these critical markets as well as his broad food service experience to the Pizza Hut family," Huston said.
"We view this merger as a great opportunity for the people of D'Angelo," McLaughlin said. "It will give our employees the opportunity to grow with PepsiCo."
Pizza Hut, a subsidiary of PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP), is the world's largest pizza distribution system, with more than 7,600 restaurants and delivery units in the United States and more than 2,200 units in 76 countries. Voted "America's Favorite Pizza Restaurant" for nine consecutive years in a Restaurants & Institutions' consumer choice poll, Pizza Hut is the recognized leader of the $17 billion U.S. pizza category.
