Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill's Jodie Cox cooled Highland High on the hottest day of the year.

Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  win before an overflow crowd Tuesday at Quartz Hill High.

The win boosts the Rebels (13-2-1, 3-0) into first place. Highland, its last loss a 5-0 nod to Cox and company two weeks ago in the High Desert softball classic final, slips to 13-3, 2-1.

Cox, a junior left-hander who improved her record to 12-2-1, struck out nine - including the last four - and allowed only two Bulldogs past first base.

``I felt stronger and more confident as I went on,'' Cox said. ``This was a big game, and I thought we did awesome.''
