PITCHER'S WORDS STRIKING PLAY ECHOES ICON'S LINES.

    Christopher "Christy" Mathewson (August 12, 1880 - October 7, 1925), nicknamed "Big Six", "The Christian Gentleman", or "Matty", was a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball.

    Stevenson Ranch resident Frierson became fascinated by the life of Mathewson after reading his 1912 book, ``Pitching in a Pinch.'' Frierson's research uncovered many personal writings of the baseball Hall-of-Famer, war hero, musician, philosopher, devoted family man and all-around international celebrity.

    Frierson's show, ``Matty: An Evening with Christy Mathewson'' comes directly from ofroadway and will be presented 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays through July 15 at the Rep, 24266 San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , Newhall.

    While the Rep is usually the venue for adult plays, such as the recent thriller ``Wait Until Dark,'' artistic director Craig Duswalt said Frierson's show is something the entire family will enjoy.

    Frierson plays Mathewson and other characters in the two-hour show set in Mathewson's attic. Almost every word in the script comes directly from Mathewson's writings.
