PIT-CREW COOL ANIMATED WEB SERIES HAS NASCAR THEME.

Byline: Evan Pondel Staff Writer

Bart Simpson may not be old enough to drive a Formula One car, but that's not stopping SportsBlast Inc., founded by Nancy Cartwright This article is about the actress. For the philosophy professor, see Nancy Cartwright (philosopher).

Last October, Turner Sports, a subsidiary of AOL (A division of Time Warner, Inc., New York, NY, www.aol.com) The world's largest online information service with access to the Internet, e-mail, chat rooms and a variety of databases and services.  Time Warner, acquired NASCAR's Internet rights.

A comedy-drama, the series will depict the world of charred rubber and checkered flags through the lives of the Kelly family, while incorporating guest appearances from famous race-car drivers - and possibly a too- young-to-drive cartoon star.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed Friday at a press conference held during the World Animation Celebration at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

``We've put together an incredible team of people. ... I feel like I have a buffer of talent around me,'' said Cartwright, whose bright eyes Bright Eyes may refer to:
  • Bright Eyes (band), an indie folk-rock band
  • Susette LaFlesche Tibbles, nicknamed "Bright Eyes", Native American activist and lecturer
  • Bright Eyes (film), a musical starring Shirley Temple

``Never thought my life could get much better and more creative,'' said the former Midwesterner turned toon.

William Widmaier, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Northridge-based SportsBlast, said coming up with an appropriate name for the series was hard.

``Many of the family names for race-car drivers were already taken, and we wanted a name that looked realistic,'' he said.

With 40 episodes planned, each three to four minutes in length, Widmaier said the goal is to keep the stories in line with NASCAR's culture.

``From the dynamics of the pit chiefs to the constant struggle with sponsors,'' he said.

The series will run from September to November, just as the NASCAR season comes to halt.

Digital-entertainment company eStudio, based in Venice, will design the characters in addition to storyboards and animation for the series.

Ken Martin, the 24-year-old executive producer of eStudio, said while there are no plans to launch a television version of The Kellys, it would be a simple transition.

Martin said about nine out of 10 TV viewers are unable to notice the difference between traditional animation Traditional animation, also referred to as classical animation, cel animation, or hand-drawn animation, is the oldest and historically the most popular form of animation. In a traditionally-animated cartoon, each frame is drawn by hand.  and animation created by a computer program called Flash.

Cartwright, an advocate of animation based on Web-based animation, said its not entirely improbable Bart Simpson may make a cameo in The Kellys.

But that will ultimately depend on the corporate powers, she said.
