PINKERTON NAMES FORMER CIA AND FBI CHIEF TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Judge William H. Webster Appointed Outside Director
of Security & Investigation Services Firm
VAN NUYS, Calif., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pinkerton Security & Investigation Services today announced that Judge William H. Webster has been named to its board of directors. Webster was FBI director from 1978 to 1987 and director of Central Intelligence (DCI) from 1987 to 1991. He becomes the seventh member of Pinkerton's board of directors and the sixth outside director of the firm.
"We are enormously proud and, indeed, flattered that a man of Judge Webster's caliber will be joining our board of directors," said Thomas Wathen, Pinkerton chairman and chief executive officer. "His distinguished career of public service and his renowned organizational capabilities make him a formidable choice for this new position. I look forward to the great benefit of Judge Webster's wise counsel on a wide range of matters involving Pinkerton's future."
After a career in private law practice, Webster was appointed a Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in 1970, and in 1973 elevated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He became director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Feb. 23, 1978 and served until 1987 in that capacity. He is widely credited with having improved the public image of the law enforcement agency. Webster was sworn in as director of Central Intelligence on May 26, 1987. In this position, he headed the intelligence community (all foreign intelligence agencies of the United States) and directed the Central Intelligence Agency until Sept. 1, 1991. Currently, he is a senior partner with the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in its Washington, D.C. office.
Webster was born on March 6, 1924, in St. Louis. He was awarded a bachelor of arts degree from Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. in 1947, where, in 1975, he received an honorary doctor of laws degree. He received his juris doctor degree from Washington University Law School, St. Louis, in 1949. He has received 17 honorary degrees and numerous awards for public service, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Security Medal and the Distinguished Intelligence Medal.
