PINER'S RETURN THE SPARK CHAMINADE 53, CLEVELAND 51.

Byline: SEAN n. 1. A seine. See Seine.  CEGLINSKY Special to the Daily News

If Max Piner was suffering any lingering effects from a head injury suffered last week during practice, the senior guard certainly didn't show it.

He scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the first half and made several key free throws in the fourth quarter to secure Chaminade of West Hills' 53-51 victory over Cleveland of Reseda, which made things interesting in the closing minute of Thursday's quarterfinal game at the Chaminade Christmas Classic.

``He showed several classic Max Piner bursts tonight, so I think he's back,'' Chaminade coach Bryan Cantwell said. ``It looks like he's forgotten about the injury. He's ready to play.''

The Eagles (7-4) entered the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a comfortable seven-point lead.

Zeke Brackens, however, kept Cleveland (8-4) close throughout the final eight minutes.

The junior guard opened the fourth with a steal and breakaway dunk to make it a 40-35 game and made a jumper to make it a two-point game with 2:12left.

His five-foot bank shot cut the deficit to 48-45 with 57seconds remaining.

``Zeke brings a lot of energy to the game,'' Cleveland coach Osiris Nalls said.

Piner answered with four free throws during back-to-back possessions down the stretch to thwart any comeback plans Brackens and the Cavaliers might have had.

He finished 8 of 8 from the line in the fourth quarter.

``I'm feeling good, 100 percent,'' said Piner, who is being recruited by a couple of Ivy League Ivy League

The Eagles used an 8-0 run, keyed by six points from Piner, over the final minute of the second quarter to take a 24-22 halftime lead.
