PILZ OPENS U.S. FACTORY TO SPIN OUT COMPACT DISCS

CONCORDVILLE, Pa., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pilz America Inc., U.S. subsidiary of privately held Pilz Group of Kranzbert, Germany, has opened a $12 million compact-disc factory and distribution center in Concordville, a southwest suburb of Philadelphia. It's the company's first manufacturing operation in the U.S.
The CD plant, unveiled at ceremonies today, initially employs approximately 60 workers, according to Martin Mair (215-459-5035), general manager, Pilz America.
The 45,000-square-foot facility can produce eight million CDs per year. Mair says the company ultimately plans to boost capacity to 40 million CDs per year by adding 22,000 square feet and hiring about 40 more workers.
Pilz uses the industry's most advanced techniques in automated production and clean-room robotics, Mair says. Pilz sent "a dozen key U.S. employees" to Germany for advanced training while the plant was under construction, he says.
Mair said Pilz was attracted to Concordville by a skilled workforce familiar with CD production. He said Pennsylvania's economic development office in Frankfurt, Germany, proposed "an attractive incentive package." He said the location is close to air and sea cargo facilities and close to independent record labels, a primary market of CD manufacturers.
Mair says the chosen site offered an existing industrial building suitable for conversion to compact disc manufacturing and warehousing.
Among Pilz's U.S. customers are Naxos of America, Cherry Hill, N.J., U.S. arm of the fast-growing Naxos budget classical CD label known for low prices and high artistic standards.
In addition to audio CDs, Pilz America manufactures optical compact discs (CD ROMs) for computer data storage.
Pilz entered the U.S. market in 1987 with a small sales and distribution operation in California for its European factories. Pilz shifted those activities to Concordville last fall in anticipation of the plant opening.
