MILPITAS, Calif., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Komag Inc. (NASDAQ: KMAG), a leading supplier of thin-film components for high-performance Winchester disk drives has appointed Nicola Pignati as vice president of Manufacturing at Dastek Inc., the company's thin-film head subsidiary.
Pignati, 43, brings to Dastek over 15 years of industry experience in the production of disk drives and key disk drive components. In his new position at Dastek, he will be responsible for thin-film head manufacturing, including wafer fabrication, slider machining, and head assembly and test, and manufacturing engineering at the company's U.S. facilities. In addition, Pignati will be responsible for worldwide production planning, materials planning and procurement. He will report to Tracy Scott, senior vice president of U.S. Operations at Dastek.
"Nic joins Dastek at a critical point in our business development," noted Scott. "During the first half of 1992, our primary goals at Dastek were to develop technically advanced microslider and nanoslider products and to improve technical manufacturing processes at Dastek. We are now actively working with prospective customers to qualify new products developed during the first half of the year. We expect to complete such customer qualifications and commence production of these improved products during the fourth quarter of this year," stated Scott.
"The manufacturing and management skills and experience that Nic brings to Dastek are very important," expained Scott, "as we continue to implement manufacturing process improvements and begin to ramp up production of these new products in anticipation of successful customer qualifications. Qualification and subsequent volume production of these products are essential for Dastek's return to profitability," Scott noted.
Prior to joining Dastek, Pignati held a number of manufacturing management and engineering positions at IBM, the most recent being manager of product manufacturing for mainframe disk drive products where he supervised a department with 900 employees. Other positions held by Pignati at IBM include manager of manufacturing for head disk assemblies (HDA) for mainframe computers and manager of head suspension/arm development. Pignati has also handled a wide range of other manufacturing, test, failure analysis and procurement engineering functions relating to the production of IBM mainframe drives.
Before joining IBM, Pignati worked for General Electric Co. as a design engineer. He holds both a bachelors degree and a masters degree in mechanical engineering from San Jose State University.
