PICTURETEL OFFERS M-8000 MULTIPOINT BRIDGE ENHANCEMENTS; NEW BRIDGE CASCADING OPTION CONNECTS UP TO 240 SITES IN A SINGLE VIDEO CALL

DANVERS, Mass. Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- PictureTel Corporation (NASDAQ: PCTL) today announced a new option for the M-8000(tm) Multipoint Bridge that allows up to 17 bridges to be cascaded to support up to 240 users in a single multipoint call. The bridges can also be segmented to support more than 100 simultaneous calls.
The cascading option also allows international callers to dramatically reduce long distance charges by cutting the number of international calls needed to establish a multipoint conference. Currently, a user conducting an international multipoint call with three colleagues in Asia, two in the U.S. and three in Europe would have all sites dial into a single M-8000 bridge located in a central location. A call of this nature would require a total of six long-distance connections. This same customer, using cascading equipped bridges in each region, can reduce the number of long distance connections to a total of two by locally connecting with the closest hub, leaving only one trans-Atlantic and one trans-Pacific connection needed to complete the multipoint call.
"The addition of cascading to the M-8000's capabilities provides PictureTel customers with the ability to hold large interactive or broadcast multipoint conferences with a minimum of cost," said James S.
Idelson, business line director for network systems. "With today's customers linking ever larger audiences through videoconferencing in applications such as distance learning and large corporate announcements, cascading is an indispensible capability."
These capabilities make the M-8000 attractive for both large corporate customers and especially for communications carriers and PTTs offering multipoint services for clients who have not yet purchased their own on-premise bridge.
The cascading option is fully field upgradeable. Each multipoint bridge to be linked via cascading can be upgraded at a cost of between $5,000 and $13,500.
