COMDEX, Las Vegas, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PictureTel Corporation (NASDAQ: PCTL), the world leader in dial-up videoconferencing, today announced the availability of PictureTel LIVE(TM) Video Connect Series for Lotus Notes(R), which allows Notes users to easily initiate and manage interactive video calls through PictureTel LIVE from the Notes environment. Video Connect Series for Notes provides users with SmartIcons(R) on the notes desktop which perform a variety of interactive commands.
Video Connect Series for Notes requires Lotus Notes Release 3 running on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Release 3.1. The minimum memory requirement is 4MB, although 8MB is recommended. PictureTel will begin worldwide shipments of the Video Connect Series in the first quarter of 1994. Pricing has not yet been determined.
PictureTel, a Lotus Notes Business Partner, also is making available a custom PictureTel database for Notes users. This database will provide Notes users with detailed information about PictureTel products and services as well as end-user applications and system functions.
"The PictureTel LIVE Video Connect Series for Lotus Notes brings powerful live interactive videoconferencing capabilities to the Notes collaborative desktop. This is the first in a series of products from PictureTel that 'video enable' Lotus Notes and add significant value to a user's investment in the product," said Martin F. Falaro, general manager of PictureTel's Desktop Business Line. "Our relationship with Lotus has provided us with an ideal partnership to make video enabled desktop collaboration not only easy to use, but extremely effective."
"We're very excited about this initial implementation of LIVE videoconferencing in Lotus Notes," said Christopher Herot, Lotus director of advanced technology. "By Notes enabling the Video Connect Series, Lotus is recognizing the importance of sharing video on the desktop. We think users will find the ability to perform interactive conferencing and share PictureTel based video information as Notes objects an important new means of sharing an organization's knowledge base."
Video Connect Series for Notes will contain SmartIcons embedded in the Notes Toolbar with the following functionality:
-- Answer and hang up a video call -- by simply double clicking on this icon, a video call can either be initiated, or terminated.
-- Bring up or store the dial pad and/or the video phone book -- Just like dialing a regular telephone call, video calls are placed by either entering the numbers on this keypad, or by double clicking on an entry in the video phone book.
-- User preferences (video on top and auto answer) -- This toggle icon lets users determine whether a video window resides on the Notes desktop and whether or not to allow the system to automatically answer incoming video calls.
-- Local video source selection -- These icons allow a Notes user to select among up to three video sources that can be connected to the PictureTel LIVE desktop videoconferencing system.
-- Audio mute -- This icon toggles between muted and unmuted audio.
-- Video Snapshot -- Double clicking on this icon takes a snapshot of the video window and allows the user to store it as a Notes file.
-- Information Sharing -- Video Connect Series for Notes also provides users with a series of icons that will access PictureTel's suite of information sharing capabilities including the chalkboard, file transfer capabilities, a meeting notes log, and the shared clipboard.
Future functionality will include video mail capabilities which will allow users to record and leave embedded video messages within the Notes environment.
