PICKING THE RIGHT PAINT COLOR -- X-RITE HAS THE ANSWER

GRANDVILLE, Mich., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- It's Saturday afternoon, the kitchen needs painting, and once again you're facing the dreaded trip to the paint store. All those color swatches, hours of indecision to find a color match, hoping your walls look the same as the little paint chip in your hand. And then -- there you are, facing the not-so- confident smile of a trainee charged with mixing the color that's going to grace your kitchen walls for the next five years.
If this scenario sounds too familiar, and you're primed to paint, you won't want to miss X-Rite, Inc.'s latest new product: a machine that moves from exact color measurement to perfectly mixed paint in a matter of seconds.
Long recognized for its technological solutions in measuring color for the graphic arts and photography industries, Grandville-based X-Rite has developed a computerized paint formulation system that will take many of the inconveniences and inconsistencies out of the paint selling and buying business, right down to the retail customer.
X-Rite announced today the first sale of its MiX-Rite(R) system to a Midwest-based paint retailer. The company has also begun actual field testing in a number of major retail outlets throughout the country.
The MiX-Rite(R) system integrates the company's spectrophotometer, computer, paint formulation software and label printer with the store's automatic tinter. It's ideal for contractors, retail chains, paint suppliers or industrialists who want to provide fast and accurate paint matches for their customers or products.
"The portable MiX-Rite(R) system not only takes most of the guesswork out of paint selection and mixing, it does it in a matter of seconds, without any extensive employee training or manual mixing," said Ted Thompson, president and CEO of X-Rite.
"MiX-Rite(R) will cut down on waste at the mixing counter, a boost for the environment. And fewer mistakes mean less frustration and inadvertent expense for people purchasing paint," Thompson said.
The MiX-Rite(R) system's spectrophotometer quickly and accurately measures and matches color against fabrics, wallpaper samples or other painted surfaces, using a computerized dual-beam optical color measuring process. The system's computer immediately calculates the appropriate color formula. The automatic tinter then punches a small hole in the paint can, adds tint, reseals the can, and the paint is mixed automatically. No manual assistance is required during this 90-second tinting and mixing process.
X-Rite, Incorporated (NASDAQ-NMS: XRIT) designs and manufactures quality control instruments for companies in the paint, plastic, textile, packaging, photographic, graphic arts, and medical industries. It has two main product lines: instruments that measure color and appearance and instruments that measure optical or photographic density. Other product lines include silver recovery equipment, shrink packaging equipment, and an X-ray marking identification system.
