PICKETS FORCE ROCKLICK OPERATIONS TO SHUT DOWN, EASTERN ASSOCIATED COAL CORP. REPORTS

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Pickets outside the Rocklick Preparation Plant of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. today caused truck drivers for contract coal company operators to stop delivering raw coal to the facility.
Coal from the Rocklick plant supplies a number of export and domestic customers that have expressed concern regarding reliability of supplies.
After initial deliveries this morning, contract coal company drivers decided they no longer could cross the picket lines set up by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in their selective strike of Eastern Associated Coal.
"It's very unfortunate that the UMWA is choosing to make the West Virginia coal industry suffer at a time when Eastern Associated is fighting to protect customer contracts and, in doing so, to preserve both UMWA-represented and salaried jobs," Peter B. Lilly, Eastern Associated Coal's president said today.
"Eastern Associated is determined to meet the needs of its coal customers and thereby preserve the jobs of UMWA employees. If the union continues this action of preventing UMWA contract operators from supplying raw coal, our customers may need to find other sources of coal from both union and non-union sources," Lilly said.
Eastern Associated Coal operates only UMWA-represented mining facilities in West Virginia, employing 2,300 miners at 10 sites.
