PIC 'N' SAVE COMPARABLE STORE SALES UP 4.5 PERCENT
 FOR THE HOLIDAY SELLING SEASON
DOMINGUEZ, Calif., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pic 'N' Save Corp. (NASDAQ: PICN) announced today that its sales for the Christmas holiday selling season (five weeks ended Dec. 29, 1991) were $111,306,000, up 4.4 percent from $106,599,000 for the same period a year ago. Comparable store sales during the five-week holiday selling season increased 4.5 percent.
"We experienced good sell-through on our seasonal Christmas merchandise. Customers responded well to our strong value-oriented merchandise assortments, without the inducement of special promotions," commented Len Williams, president and chief executive officer. "Coming out of Christmas, we are better prepared for 1992's business, both in terms of our merchandise assortment and our store operations."
For the fiscal December period (five weeks ended Jan. 5, 1992), Pic 'N' Save's total sales were $100,063,000, a decrease of 6.1 percent from $106,599,000 in the same fiscal period of the prior year. Comparable store sales for fiscal December were down 6.2 percent. These numbers reflect the six fewer pre-Christmas selling days that occurred in fiscal December this year as compared to last year.
Sales from continuing operations for the 48 weeks year-to-date were $512,031,000, an increase of 6.2 percent from the prior year's sales of $482,027,000. Year-to-date comparable store sales are up 1.9 percent. Sales from continuing operations exclude the company's 14 Job Lot Pushcart stores which were sold in August 1990.
The company operates a chain of 194 retail stores in 12 states. These stores, which do business as Pic 'N' Save and MacFrugal's, feature a variety of first-quality general merchandise obtained through manufacturer close-outs, overruns, discontinued lines and packaging changes. An ever-changing assortment of merchandise is typically sold at 40 to 70 percent off regular retail prices.
