Piazza, who was struck on the left arm in Pittsburgh last Friday, homered off Mike Hampton Michael William Hampton (born September 9, 1972 in Brooksville, Florida, U.S.) is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher who plays for the Atlanta Braves. He bats right-handed and throws left-handed. Hampton is well-known for being one of the best active hitting pitchers.  (1-3) in the fifth inning. Martinez (2-1) pitched 6-1/3 innings and Todd Worrell

Entering the game, the Dodgers' No. 1 starter had a 2.65 ERA and was going after his 10th victory in 13 career decisions against Houston.

Martinez struck out four in the first two innings, but trailed 1-0 after Thomas Howard Thomas Howard may refer to several people, including: Nobles

In the bottom of the second, the Dodgers were in position for revenge with a man on first and second with two outs. Shortstop Greg Gagne attempted to continue L.A.'s rally by doubling to right field. But the crowd's cheers turned to jeers jeer

Television replays later showed that Karros' lead foot caught the plate under the body of catcher Brad Ausmus.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Dodgers finally got a run when Todd Hollandsworth, who had three hits, doubled home Piazza.

Despite being a laughable threat as a batter, Martinez helped his own cause in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Hollandsworth on second with one out, the Dodgers ace worked Hampton for 10 pitches before moving his teammate over on a base on a ground out. Although Martinez's batting average still looked dismal at .000, his efforts brought the home crowd to their feet.

Martinez's gritty at-bat also tired his pitching foe who followed by giving up a double to Brett Butler which scored Hollandsworth and gave the Dodgers some breathing room at 5-3. After Butler's RBI RBI

, Hampton was lifted after allowing allowing nine hits and five earned runs in 5-2/3 innings.

After keeping the Astros scoreless for three-consecutive innings, Martinez was battered in the top of the seventh. After allowing two hits, which put an Astro on second and third with one out, Martinez left the game in a nervous state. But relievers Darren Driefort and Scott Radinsky combined efforts to get the Dodgers out of the inning unscathed.

The Astros made a last-ditch effort when Ausmus stole third base in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a bad throw by Piazza to third. Ausmus' run chopped the Dodgers' lead to 5-3.
