PHP HEALTHCARE OPENS FAMILY HEALTH CENTER FOR BETHLEHEM STEEL

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- PHP Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: PPH) strengthened its private sector business development today with the opening of a $1.3 million Family Health Center for Bethlehem Steel Corporation (NYSE: BS) near the company's Pennsylvania headquarters. "This is the latest effort of PHP Healthcare to demonstrate that the health care reform issues currently under debate can be resolved at a grassroots level," asserted Charles H. Robbins, president and chairman of PHP Healthcare.
The facility will provide a wide variety of medical and laboratory services to an estimated 37,000 active and retired hourly and salaried employees of Bethlehem Steel. According to Benjamin C. Boylston, Bethlehem Steel vice president of human resources, the facility is expected to substantially reduce the company's $27 million annual health care bill for employees in the headquarters region. If the clinic is successful in the Lehigh Valley area, the company will consider similar operations at other plant locations.
Significantly, the Family Health Center was developed with the cooperation of the four steelworker union locals representing Bethlehem Steel's employees. A joint union/management committee has been established to monitor the center's operations.
PHP Healthcare is developing similar facilities for other major corporations. Two primary health clinics for the employees and dependents of GTE Corporation in the Tampa, Fla., area opened on June 3 and will be dedicated later this month. PHP Healthcare also provides occupational health care services for Chrysler Corporation at two plant locations.
