PHOTOGRAPHER SHOOTS ARTISTIC MASTERPIECE.Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer Fred Frederickson got hooked on photography in high school more than four decades ago. As the business manager for the school newspaper, he recalls watching a photographer make a print of a picture for a publication on a beauty contest. ``I saw the print materialize in the developer. It kind of hooked me and it started from there,'' said Frederickson, 58, a retired magazine distributor. ``That was in the black and white days.'' Frederickson has been doing photography since then, and in the 30 years he's lived in the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. Frederickson took the photograph last February, hiking down more than 50 feet into the narrow canyon with fellow members of the Lancaster Photography Association, of which Frederickson is president. ``It was very difficult getting down there, especially for me. I'm a little large,'' Frederickson said, chuckling. Art show judge Ted Kerzie, an art professor from California State University Enrollment ``It's very innovative . . . a very, very lyrical composition,'' Kerzie said. ``What's really interesting is the photographs in the entire show was some of the best work, and I'm a painter. I really enjoyed them. The show was of really good quality for an all-regional show.'' Frederick's work was the first photograph to win the best of show award. In fact, two of the top three prizes were awarded to photographs. ``That was kind of surprising,'' museum curator Norma Gurba said. ``The judge wasn't a photographer. He was so impressed with the quality.'' Taking second place was Georgia Trost Smith's acrylic painting acrylic painting Painting executed in the medium of acrylic resins—synthetic resins that dry rapidly, are water-soluble, and serve as a vehicle for any pigment. Green is such a difficult color to handle but in this painting it is so well done,'' Kerzie wrote in his judging remarkes. Placing third was Nickie Dana, whose photograph, ``Private World,'' is a quiet scene of concrete steps and a weathered door. ``This work is so expressive. The color is subtle yet at the same time extremely sophisticated. I like the abstraction on the stucco walls and the way the artist picks up the mystic feeling of the door. This is a superb photograph,'' Kerzie wrote. WINNING ARTISTS Award winning entries in the 12th annual Juried All Media Art Exhibition at the Lancaster Museum Art Gallery.
