PHOENIX NEWSPAPERS INC. LEADS INDUSTRY IN CREATING TECHNOLOGY POSITION

PHOENIX, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix Newspapers Inc. has named Howard Finberg to the newly created position of senior editor/information technology. Effective immediately, the appointment represents "PNI's commitment to technology and being Arizona's leading information source," said Executive Editor John F. Oppedahl in announcing the position.
Phoenix Newspapers Inc., among the industry's first to produce entirely paginated newspapers, publishes The Arizona Republic, The Phoenix Gazette and Arizona Business Gazette. Finberg has served as assistant managing editor at The Republic since 1987 with responsibilities for the features sections and the visual departments.
"By keeping us abreast of technological developments and opportunities, Finberg's new position will help us meet the consumer's changing need for information," Oppedahl said, noting PNI is one of the first newspapers to create such a position.
Finberg's major responsibilities include planning and establishing new ventures such as on-line services for both news and advertising products, audiotex services and database marketing; directing the introduction of new text-editing and pagination systems; planning aspects of PNI's move into a new building, which is scheduled for groundbreaking in September 1994 and assessing and recommending PNI's involvement in new technology and new media.
Prior to joining The Republic, Finberg held management and/or editing positions at the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. He is also the co-author of the college-level textbook, "Visual Editing: A Graphic Guide for Journalists."
