A recent Federal Trade Commission report noted that cigar companies had been required to turn over their records as to how they were spending their promotion budgets - and it turned out that most of the money was going for product placement on TV and in movies.

A labor of love

For his feature-film directing debut of David Mamet's play ``Lakeboat,'' Joe Mantegna Joseph Anthony Mantegna, Jr. (born November 13, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actor. Biography
Born into an Italian-American family, he made his acting debut in the 1969 stage production of Hair.

Columbo in the television series Columbo. , Charles Durning and Robert Forster - he managed to get them to work for practically nothing. ``Everybody's doing this as a personal favor to Joe,'' says Forster. ``This is a little movie. The play was done five years ago in Chicago, and they've been trying to get it produced as a movie ever since.''

Forster says the film, which also stars the play's original cast members, George Wendt, J.J. Johnston, Jack Wallace and Tony Mamet, ``has been modified to open it up for a movie.'' But Mantegna is still being a stickler stick·ler

about the cast maintaining the integrity of the playwright's script. ``Mamet wants his words to be spoken exactly as he wrote them ... and Joe wants those words, so we're trying real hard to give 'em to him.''

``Lakeboat,'' the first play Mamet ever wrote, is about an Ivy League college student who interns for the summer on a freighter on the Great Lakes.

No acting ... for now

Hollywood is knocking on Natalie Imbruglia's door, but the songstress song·stress

``At some point last year, I thought about seriously trying to do both (acting and singing), and I had a couple of meetings. But I've changed my mind,'' says Imbruglia, who starred on an Australian soap before hitting it big as singer. ``It was obvious that my heart wasn't really in it, and I hate to do anything halfheartedly.''

She says she does intend to take up acting again ``at some point, but I can't do both really well at the same time right now.'' Right now, Imbruglia is working on the follow-up to her ``Left of the Middle'' CD.

Now that's a leak!

Mike O'Malley is still stinging over the leak of the lengthy memo he wrote to insiders on his new NBC ``Mike O'Malley Show.'' The playwright/comedian/actor tells us he began composing what's been referred to as his show ``manifesto'' for new NBC Entertainment prexy prex·y

When the document was finished, O'Malley decided to give it to his writers, too. ``Then, someone thought it would be something to make fun of,'' he says - and leaked it to industry trade press.

``It's very intense, with thoughts on marriage, relationships, life and fate,'' adds O'Malley. ``I don't want this character to be just another ridiculous guy in a wacky situation. I think he's going to be asking big questions. At 30, he's saying, `What does my life mean?' A lot of people wake up one day and say, `Wait, I've been kind of coasting. Look at me. I'm 32 - where did the time go?' ''

Gee, Mike ... a network show with your name on it isn't exactly coasting. Answers Mike, ``I thought I'd have a lot more things figured out by now. I thought at this stage of my life I'd be smart enough not to have a memo getting leaked.'' By the way, the show's scripts reportedly got funnier after that memo was issued.
