Phillips was taken to the Anaheim Police Temporary Detention Facility and posted bail later Sunday morning.

He was originally scheduled to start in left field for the Angels in their game Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  against Baltimore.

Phillips was at the stadium before the game but never spoke with the media. Angels general manager Bill Bavasi William J. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB  gave Phillips permission to return to his Scottsdale, Ariz., home ``to be with his family to make sure the situation is taken care of from that end.''

The Angels are off Monday, and Bavasi said he expected Phillips to start Tuesday against Chicago. He emphasized that Phillips remains on the team's active roster and that the baseball commissioner's office had been notified.

In a statement, the team said: ``While the Anaheim Angels Baseball Club and Anaheim Sports, Inc., do not condone the use of illegal substances for any member of its ball club or organization, we will reserve judgment until all the facts are compiled and reviewed.''

Phillips was disappointed the Angels did not pursue him, but signed a two-year, $3.6 million deal with Chicago on Jan. 20, 1996.

Phillips is earning $1.8 million this season. The switch-hitter will be a free agent after the season.

Of the Angels' seven ejections this season, Phillips has two. He had trouble with the White Sox last season and became involved in a number of altercations. He announced his retirement in spring training 1996, only to return to the White Sox 48 hours later.

On April 21 while with Chicago, Phillips was ejected by home plate umpire John Shulock just three pitches into a game against the Yankees. Shulock ejected him after he warned him not to leave the batter's box. Following the ejection, Phillips charged Shulock but was restrained by three members of the White Sox. AL president Gene Budig suspended Phillips for two games. Thirteen days later, he was traded.

Phillips later suggested that Budig, who is white, was racist.
