PHILAPRIDE ANNOUNCES DONALDSON AWARD WINNER; RONALD RUBIN TO ACCEPT

PHILADELPHIA, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Ronald Rubin, chief executive officer and managing partner of The Rubin Organization, Inc., has been chosen as the recipient of the 1993 William V. Donaldson Civic Pride Award, to be presented at PhilaPride's annual Shining Example Awards luncheon at the Hotel Atop the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets, on Wednesday, April 14.
Initiated by PhilaPride in 1992, the Donaldson Award is given annually to an individual who has actively displayed an ongoing and deep personal concern for the welfare of the Greater Philadelphia region. The award is meant to recognize personal qualities exemplified by its namesake, including commitment, resourcefulness, integrity, public service and civic pride.
Rubin makes major contributions to community affairs in the Philadelphia area through several board memberships such as Continental Bank, Franklin Institute Science Museum, Philadelphia Orchestra, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Midlantic Bank, Philadelphia Electric Company and University of the Arts. He spearheaded the development of the highly successful Center City District, funded by local businesses and residents to assure a cleaner, safer downtown, and serves as chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Rubin is also a board member for United Israel Appeal, Tel Aviv University, American Friends of Hebrew University and the United Jewish Appeal.
Bill Donaldson, the late Zoological Society of Philadelphia president, was a founding board member of PhilaPride. He crafted PhilaPride's litter-prevention program with the help of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. in 1985 in response to concern about the need to improve the city's cleanliness in order to attract tourism and economic development to the region.
Alexander L. "Pete" Hoskins, who has recently taken over Donaldson's position as president of the Philadelphia Zoo, was last year's Donaldson Award recipient and will present the award at this year's ceremony. The Donaldson Award is the highlight of PhilaPride's annual Shining Example Award, given to recognize and reinforce individuals, businesses and organizations that help make Greater Philadelphia cleaner and prouder.
Other 1993 Shining Example Award winners include: Mayor Edward G. Rendell in the Government category; Simple Green in the Coporate category; the Pennsylvania Environmental Council in the Environmental category; Kensington's Israel Williams in the Individual category; Ramona Smith of the Philadelphia Daily News in the Media category; the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association in the Neighborhood category; the Sanitation Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department in the Public Organization category; the Broad & Olney Sanitation Steering Committee in the Partnership category; Christopher's Bakery Cafe in the Small Business category; the Philadelphia Youth Service Corps in the Youth category; and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Friends of Rittenhouse Square both receive awards in the Private Organization category.
PhilaPride is a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization dedicated to a cleaner, prouder Philadelphia region. Founded in 1985 as a joint venture between the City of Philadelphia and Greater Philadelphia First, the organization has grown into one of the nation's model clean-up programs.
