PHILADELPHIA ELECTRIC STIFFENS STANCE ON NEGLIGENCE CHARGES: PHILADELPHIA
 MAN JAILED FOR FRAUD
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) is sending a message that it is taking a more aggressive stance toward negligence claims against the company.
In one case that culminated this year, PECO found what it believed to be unwarranted charges against the company, and it asked the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office to prosecute for fraud. The claim against PECO was found to be false, and the litigant is now behind bars.
On Sept. 18, Andre Williams, 28, of Southwest Philadelphia, was sentenced to nine to 23 months in a city prison after being found guilty in July of theft by deception. The criminal sentence follows what turned out to be a faked fall two years ago inside one of PECO's former appliance store locations.
Williams charged that he allegedly sustained injury during a fall at The Electric Company store at PECO's Main Office site in Center City, Philadelphia. He later filed a civil complaint, asking $15,000 in damages.
PECO officials subsequently determined that Williams staged the fall in order to collect damages. Two witnesses came forward to support PECO's findings, and the case was turned over to the Philadelphia District Attorney. The trial and sentencing was conducted by Common Pleas Court Judge A.J. Snite, Jr.
James McGoldrick, PECO manager of claims/security, said it was the first case of its type the company ever prosecuted for fraud. He said there are other outstanding claims that are being further scrutinized.
"These types of claims will not be tolerated, and the company will aggressively investigate each one and take appropriate action," McGoldrick said.
