PHILADELPHIA ELECTRIC PROMOTES SAFETY AND SAVINGS FOR THE WINTER SEASON
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The winter heating season is just around the corner and Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) (PECo) wants to help prepare its customers for safe, efficient house heating before winter weather arrives.
Many customers will be turning on their gas heaters soon, if they haven't already. So, PECo said, now is the time to have heaters checked to make sure they're working properly, and safely.
 The company recommends:
-- A periodic maintenance check on heating systems. Call a qualified contractor or PECo for assistance.
-- Check and change hot air furnace filters prior to and during the heating season. A dirty filter reduces efficiency.
-- Keep heating equipment blowers and motors clean and lubricated.
-- Keep the area around gas house and water heaters free from clothing or debris.
-- Don't hang anything from gas supply piping.
In addition to running heaters safely, there are also ways to save money. PECo suggests:
-- Lower the thermostat. Each degree would save about 3 percent on a customer's heating bill.
-- Consider installing a programmable or setback thermostat. This will automatically set the temperature back at night and turn the heat on in the morning. It can also be set to turn the temperature down when the house is unoccupied.
-- Avoid heating unused rooms. Keep doors and registers closed in rooms not being used.
-- Do not block off registers or radiators with furniture, draperies or other obstructions.
-- Minimize drafts by weather stripping or caulking.
PECo serves 265,000 suburban residential natural gas heating customers.
